MDM celebrate 50 years of the rock music of heavy metal icons, Motörhead, with a 3oz high-relief silver coin
Formed in 1975 in London by bassist and lead vocalist Lemmy Kilmister, guitarist Larry Wallis and drummer Lucas Fox, Motörhead went on to reinvigorate heavy metal in the 70s and 80s. Lemmy wrote most of the songs, and was the only one to have been in Motörhead for the entirety of its existence, although changes to the drummer and guitarist were relatively rare with the introductions of drummer Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor and guitarist “Fast” Eddie Clarke.
To say they were successful is a gross understatement, with 23 studio albums, 10 live recordings, 12 compilation albums and five EPs, including such all-time greats as Ace of Spades, released in 1980. I first came across them in the cult anarchic TV show, The Young Ones, where they played ‘Ace of Spades’. They disbanded in 2015, after the death of Lemmy Kilmeister on 28th December that year. A fitting tribute to the man who was the heart and soul of one of the greatest rock bands of all time. They’ve sold over 25m albums to date.
MDM issued a Motörhead coin a couple of years ago, which was decent enough, but relatively standard in design. The latest issue is a whole other beast, themed around Ace of Spades, itself celebrating 45 years. The coin is shaped like a playing card’s spade, and the reverse face features the bands’ mascot, Snaggletooth, also known as War-pig. In the background are human skulls – lots and lots of skulls… At the top sits the band’s name, and a to-the-point anniversary logo. High-relief is in abundance.
The obverse is superb, featuring the Lemmy, and the band’s last three members of 20 years standing, Lemmy, Mikkey Dee, and Phil Campbell, in bust form, and accompanied by their autographs. The packaging looks excellent, as well. All together, a fine tribute to these giants of rock, and one sure to please their legions of fans.
