Star Trek’s iconic NCC 1701 USS Enterprise is reproduced as a silver coin from Samoa by MDM Wholesale

Seemingly appearing every couple of years, the ultra-iconic USS Enterprise (NCC 1701) appears as a shaped coin, with varying degrees of success. The first attempt was by the Royal Canadian Mint, who released a ten-ounce depiction that we were singularly unimpressed with. Conversely, the next attempt was by the NZ Mint, who produced a cast miniature of superb quality, but that wasn’t a coin. The NZ Mint had another go with an actual coin, in a choice of two weights, but it was hardly accurate, or particularly three-dimensional, although quite neat in its own way.

Now, MDM have launched a new, cast three-dimensional coin, issued for Samoa, and taking all the finer points of the NZ Mint’s early sculpture. It’s a lighter piece, tipping the scales at three ounces, rather than almost five, yet appears to be very similar in overall size, so it may be hollow in places. It looks to be a great interpretation. The saucer detailing is a little heavy, but the nacelles are certainly on point. It stands up very well to the considerably more expensive NZ Mint sculpt, which we believe sold out some time ago.

The ship is all antique-finished, and the inscribed coin issue details are in a ring-fenced area on the underside of the saucer. It comes with a black acrylic display stand, which looks decent, if unadventurous, and the shipper is attractively themed, making this a fine item to gift to a Trekker. Available to order now, just shy of a thousand of these will be produced. If this one is successful, we may see more of these in the future – they aren’t exactly short of source material. Klingon Bird of Prey, anyone?
