Scottsdale Mint debuts the fourth in its annual Samoan Seahorse silver bullion coin programme

Today sees the return of one of Scottsdale Mint’s numerous bullion coin series, and in our view, one of the best of them. The Samoan Seahorse debuted in 2018 with a brilliant uncirculated silver coin, changing in 2019 to a dual offering of brilliant uncirculated and antiqued. It’s the latter of the two finishes that has endeared the series to us here, reaching a peak with a superb 2020 design.

It’s back again, and it’s another good-looking coin, especially in that more limited antique finish, although not reaching the heights of last years, in our view at least. As before, the wee aqua-nag takes centre-stage, and rather than last year’s almost Hokusai-like background, there’s a more natural looking one this year. The only negative for us is the re-emergence of a border area, after a very effective absence in 2020.

The obverse is the same Samoan emblem layout that Scottsdale have used, not just on this series, but on other Samoan coins without further decoration. The mintages for 2021 are up on last year (depressed as a consequence of Covey), but a bit down on 2020 at 15k for the BU variant, and 5k for the antiqued. Both remain at a troy ounce in weight. A very nice release, upholding the high standard of the series, it’s available to pre-order now, with shipping late in December. We’ve added this one to our newly updated and refreshed guide to Scottsdale’s numerous small bullion coin series.
