With Queen Elizabeth having two birthdays, an actual one and an official one, it gives the mints two bites of the cherry to release commemorative coins, although it’s usually only the Royal Mint that marks the official one. To do so this year, they’re producing 500 brilliant-uncirculated gold Sovereigns, each struck on June 11th and with an enclosed Certificate of Authenticity to say that is the case. In all respects it’s the same coin as is usually available, there being no distinguishing marks on them.

Selling for £500.00, it represents a significant mark-up on the £360.00 these usually sell for in the standard retail packaging, so you’re really going to have to want one. No doubt these will be gone in very short order regardless, the Queen being extremely popular on numismatics this year, with coins from the Royal Mint especially so. It’s a shame that the mint didn’t strike a small privy mark or serial number into the coins to make them special, as these seem overpriced for what ‘s on offer.

SPECIAL PACKAGING

MINTS DESCRIPTION

On 21 April a series of celebrations began as Queen Elizabeth II reached her 90th birthday, becoming the first British monarch to celebrate this landmark birthday. As Her Majesty The Queen has two birthdays, we have another opportunity to join the festivities. At The Royal Mint we have marked this historic royal occasion with The Sovereign struck on 11 June 2016, Her Majesty’s official birthday.

The Queen reaching her 90th birthday is an event we have celebrated along with the Royal Family, as we have done for so many happy occasions. Each royal event generates huge interest around the world, and the range of coins already released for this event has sold out of several individual issues. As the royal celebration continues we have struck The Sovereign, a coin closely associated with the monarch, on Her Majesty’s official birthday, 11 June 2016.

The striking is authenticated by the hand-signed Certificate of Authenticity that accompanies the 22 carat Brilliant Uncirculated coin. The reverse of the coin features the classic St George and the dragon design by Benedetto Pistrucci, while the obverse bears the most recent coinage portrait of The Queen by Royal Mint coin designer Jody Clark. Limited to just 500 editions, this is a very exclusive souvenir of a rare event in British history.
