2021 HOGWARTS SCHOOL OF WITCHCRAFT AND WIZARDRY (MDM)
This one is an incredible piece of coin art. Tipping the scales at a kilo, it uses MDMâs multi-player process, the one that has made such a hit of their architectural series iv er the last few years. This imparts a feeling of depth on the coin like no other, but thatâs all irrelevant if the design isnât up to scratch. Fortunately, there are no problems in that department.
Summing up the smash-hit fantasy world of Harry Potter in a single coin is quite an achievment, but the designer has managed to cram many of the most iconic elements in here. The multi-layer (in this case, eight) process has its roots in architecture, so itâs perhaps fitting that Hogwarts, the magical school, is the main focus. The multi-layers arenât really in evidence with Hogwarts itself, with relief on the school being relatively slight in comparison to how far it sits over the background, but it works to maximise the sense of depth overall.
The heavily concave background has all five of the main crests laid out on it, each sitting with plenty of relief of their own. As we said, a striking piece overall and about as good as a Harry Potter coin could be.

2021 HARRY POTTER COMMEMORATIVE GOLD BAR (MDM)
A relatively simple affair, itâs a well known group image of Potter and pals, but the use of five-grams of gold is unusual, and means it will be relatively more affordable than most of this genre. The packaging is neat as well.

2022 THE GOLDEN SNITCH DIMENSIONAL (MDM)
The weirdo of the selection, this is a snitch, the âballâ used in the flying broomstick game of Quidditch. Itâs formed in three ounces of silver and then fully gilded and is quite the coin for the Harry Potter fan. MDM has a bit of a history with spherical coins, like the Blue Marble and Moon issues, so this is obviously an evolution of those.

2021 HARRY POTTER & THE PHILOSOPHERâS STONE BAR (MDM)
This one depicts the first movie, thankfully with its original title, rather than the dumbed-down one they came up with for the US market. Itâs a rectangular, one-ounce proof coin, with colour, and five zirconia crystals embedded in it. The presentation looks neat, but on the whole, a pretty unambitious design for MDM.

2021 HARRY POTTER SILVER NOTE/BOOKMARK (MDM)
We were quite pleased to see this one as silver foils have taken a popularity dive over the last year or so, as mints move back onto more familiar territory. MDM are pushing this as dual use, as both a collectable, and as a bookmark, although I wouldnât want a âŹ50 bookmark to worry about.
The best part of this one isnât the design, which is decent enough, but the fact itâs the first in a series that will be multi-franchise. The second one will be for Game of Thrones, and then Lord of the Rings.

2022 FANTASTIC BEASTS: NIFFLER (MDM)
A spin-off from the Harry Potter movies, âFantastic Beastsâ has managed to maintain much of that blockbuster franchiseâs popularity, and is soon to enjoy a third entrant. Compared to Potter, there have been relatively few coins themed for them, but MDM have stepped up to the mark with an unusual offering.
Apparently, the Niffler looks like a platypus, but has the same attraction to shiny objects that a magpie has. MDM have depicted the creature on a one-ounce shaped silver coin, surrounded by gold coins. These have been enhanced with what theyâre calling a holo-foil finish, but the current images donât show it off too well. One for the fan, for sure.

2021 HARRY POTTER COMEMORATIVE MINIGOLD (MDM)
Minigold coins are always popular, despite, or maybe because of, their tiny size. It does mean you can pick up gold for an affordable price and the quality of the strike of these coins has risen quite a bit over the last decade, This one seemsdetailed enough for its 11 mm diameter and the packaging is comprised of a very neat âcredit-cardâ style blister, much like the NZ Mint did with their Disney series a few years ago.

2021 GLOW IN THE DARK PATRONUS (MDM)
On the surface this is an upscaled version of the popular coloured one-ounce silver coin, but apart from the heftier weight of five ounces, it also has a glow-in-the-dark colouring which you can see on the image above by moving the slider. It’s also quite wide at 65 mm in diameter.

2021 HARRY POTTER ANNIVERSARY (MDM)
A traditional quarter-ounce fine gold coin carries a depiction of the trio of wizards that we’ve seen elsewhere in this roundup. Nicely presented with a Certificate of Authenticity.

2021 THREE WIZARDS SET (MDM)
This is a simple three-coin set struck in an ounce of fine silver with some selective colouring on the reverse face. It features the three core characters and has a common style across them all. It comes in a custom box with a Certificate of Authenticity.

2020 THE GOLDEN SNITCH WINDOWED (MDM)
A very unique piece, it’s a relatively huge 70mm in diameter and struck as a ring in two-ounces of fine silver. The centre is filled with a window into which is suspended a miniature Golden Snitch formed from 0.2 grams of fine gold. It’s certainly different from MDM’s dimensional piece.

2021 MINIGOLD COIN BARS (MDM)
Minigold coins are back with this ‘ingot’ style set of twelve designs. They can be purchased individually, but there’s also a themed album available to collect them all together. These are tiny, so don’t expect every detail of these renders to be visible, but minting has advanced to the stage that most of it will be. An impressive feat.

2021 MOVIE SCENE COLLECTION (MDM)
These are actually silver versions of the third series of base metal Potterverse coins issued by MDM. In this case they depict scenes from the movies rather than the more common character or crest designs. They can be purchased individually, or as a set, in silver or base metal form, although a set in silver would be prohibitively expensive.
