25TH ANNIVERSARY OF HARRY POTTER (Royal Mint)

2022 01 HARRY POTTER

2022 02 HOGWARTS EXPRESS

2023 03 ALBUS DUMBLEDORE

2023 04 HOGWARTS SCHOOL

A four-coin programme, with four coins carrying the same basic artwork across two ranges. This is the more expansive range, covering one-ounce silver to two-ounce gold, all cleanly struck. A neat feature is the lenticular area that displays the number 25, or a lightning flash depending on how you hold the coin. This is absent on the 1/4 oz gold. The five-ounce silver variant is exclusively distributed by German producer, MDM Wholesale.

The same as the above, but in the heptagonal fifty-pence format that’s immensely popular in the UK. The key difference here is the far smaller range of offerings, just two, and the colour application to the silver version.

COMMON OBVERSE

Very similar in concept to the three gram coins, this one is simply a bigger version at double the weight. Thankfully, the mint has gone for an increased diameter instead of the Royal Mint’s annoying habit of issuing double thickness piedfort variants.

€250 GOLD SERIES (Monnaie de Paris)

A simple two-coin series of three-gram gold coins featuring the game of Quidditch. These are relatively affordable for gold coins and have a cheaper, light-weight presentation.

HARRY POTTER (Monnaie de Paris)

2021 HARRY POTTER

2022 HOGWARTS/DUMBLEDORE

This one has a close in portrait of Harry Potter, with Dumbledore filling the background a little further away. It looks like the glasses have been enhanced through the use of differing finishes, but we’ll have to reserve judgment until actual coin images are available. It does look promising. Again, inscriptions are minimal. The 2022 issue splits the design with a different one for each metal.

The obverse is similar to that of the five ounce coin, but without the colour. The same 22.2 gram silver format as usual, but the gold is at least a more affordable quarter-ounce. All are boxed with a C.O.A.

Possibly the best balance between size and price, these 41 gram silver coins all have colour highlighting on the reverse face, and go with core parts of the mythos rather than getting too specific.

2022 SORTING HAT

The most striking of the range are clearly the shaped coins, with the mint making a rare foray into shaped numismatics. They’re pretty cool looking designs, one showing the owl holding Potter’s acceptance letter into Hogwarts, the other the sorting hat. The obverse continues the theme with the back of the subject being depicted, into which is inscribed the denomination, etc. The two formats are Monnaie de Paris staples – the one ounce gold and the 22.2 gram silver.

€50 HARRY POTTER TRIO (Monnaie de Paris)

The biggest of the ‘normal’ format coins is a five-ounce silver coin with some selective colour highlighting on the obverse. This one shows Harry, Hermione and Ron ready for action, and the Hogwarts shield emblem, with the four house emblems coloured, fills the obverse.

€5 QUIDDITCH MINIGOLD (Monnaie de Paris)

A one-off minigold coin for 2022 is a cool idea, allowing those on tighter budgets to get a bit of gold Potterdom. The customised obverse is an especially nice touch for the format.

2021 €10 SILVER SERIES (Monnaie de Paris)

Despite the ever more convoluted world of media franchise licencing, we were surprised to see the Monnaie de Paris putting out Harry Potter coins given the mints overwhelming focus on French subjects and the tenuous link to the hit Potter universe.

This year (2021) they issued an 18-coin series of cheap and cheerful coins struck in the anaemic 0.333 fineness silver. The plus side of this, and something we feel most other mints forget, is that they’re very affordable for the younger collector at just €12 (€14 for coloured). They’re also well presented in custom blisterpacks. We have to say, these look terrific for the money, with a wide selection of styles and subjects – indeed, some of the best with seen for the Wizarding Universe. If you like Potter and don’t like any of these, we feel sorry for the poor sod that has to buy you a birthday present, as you’re very hard to please!

2022 €10 SILVER SERIES (Monnaie de Paris)

The same basic format as the 2021 series, there are only five issues for 2022, each depicting one of the Hogwarts crests. In addition, there is a boxed set of the five, plus the €50 Acceptance Letter coin you can see earlier. There were 5,000 sets produced.

2020 HOGWART’S CRESTS (Crown Mint)

A simple and good value series of five house crest coins, they’re cleanly struck to a proof finish and issued for Gibraltar. An unusual size at 9.5 grams, they come in blistercard packaging.

2020 HARRY POTTER CHARACTERS (Crown Mint)

Remarkably absent from the precious metal coin world previously, Harry Potter is finally joined the club with an eight-issue set of coloured, one-ounce character proof coins. Each of the coins showcases one of the major characters in full colour using their movie personas, with a differing view of Hogwarts cleanly struck in the background field. Issued for Fiji, that nations coat of arms fills much of the obverse, along with inscribed issue and composition details.

Each coin comes in an individually themed box that holds the encapsulated coin, and can even hold it if placed in an NGC graded slab. As with some of this producers popular Marvel-themed releases, a nice touch is the certificate of authenticity being made of fine silver. With their own custom artwork, along with the serial number (2,000 of each will be struck), it’s almost like getting a silver foil with every coin.
