2019 ENDURING SOLDIERS ‘ZAPORA’

The seventh coin in the ‘Enduring Soldiers Accursed by the Communists’ series, this range celebrates the lives of those who were killed in the communist-led purges after the end of the Second World War. It’s easy to forget that the fall of Nazism didn’t suddenly lead to peace across Europe and that the fall of the iron curtain just meant that many of the peoples of the Eastern European states simply swapped one tyranical murderer for another.

Poland suffered badly during the war and for many years after as this fiercely independant people tried and failed to get self rule. Many heroes were killed and the coins in the range make sure that they’re not forgotten. At half an ounce of sterling silver in weight, these are meant to be cheap and easy to collect, helped by the 15,000 mintage. We’ve added the latest coin featuring  Hieronim ‘Zapora’ Dekutowski to our profile and the series is well worth reading more about. The NBP does a great job with the backstory to each issue and we’ve reproduced it in full. There will be two more issues in 2019.

2019 STEPHEN BATHORY

The 15th issue in the National Bank of Poland’s quite outstanding ‘Treasures of Stanislaw August series, its subject Stephen Bathory was a 16th century ruler of Poland. A reproduction of a collection of medallions by medallists, Jan Filip Holzhaeusser and Jan Jakub Reichel that were commissioned by the last king of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Stanislaw August Poniatowski, this series comprises of a 2oz silver and a 2oz gold variant.

The first coin debuted in 2013, and they were initially issued at a rate of 3-per-year, but this dropped to 2 and now just a single piece comes out annually. We’re not surprised – three two-ounce gold coins a year is a serious commitment for any collector. Like the Enduring Soldiers coin above, we have a Coin Series Profile of these beautiful coins up for your perusal and we’ve added this one to it. Again, the NBP provides plenty of backstory and again, we’ve reproduced it. Well worth a look.
