Our latest catchup of the new pop-culture coin and foil releases from the most prolific producer of them, Agoro by the New Zealand Mint

Agoro, the collectible department of the New Zealand Mint, continues to bring their abilities to bear on the pop-culture genre, and in a prolific way, and there are regular coins from the Marvel, Star Wars, Harry Potter, DC Comics, and Star Trek franchises. They continue to add new licences, and there are coins for the hit animated series, Invincible, and for a wide variety of popular Disney films and characters.

There’s quite the mix of formats, from elongated rectangular 3oz coins, to huge 1oz silver foils, and plenty of shaped issues, so it’s fair to say that anyone interested in this genre will find something they like.

BOOK COVERS 03: 2025 HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN

The third Harry Potter ‘Book Covers’ was released recently, and as you’d expect, it’s the third book getting showcased here, The Prisoner of Azkaban. In a glut of Harry Potter releases, (seriously, check out our humungous profile!), this one stands out for its theme, choosing the original run of book covers by artist, Mary GrandPré, which were distinctly different from the UK covers by Cliff Wright. It’s refreshing to see a classic take, rather than the monotonous flow of Hollywood imagery we usually get on coins.

There’s little not to like here, with a nice size, excellent packaging, and a sensible mintage. As we said before, the original art was much wider, covering the back and folds of the cover, and we still believe that would make a good silver foil series, given Agoro is back producing them in increased numbers, as witnessed by the Star Wars Blueprints further down.

STAR WARS BLUEPRINTS 03: 2025 DARTH VADER

Great to see Agoro continuing to push silver foils, which do seem to be garnering some increased interest again, and it’s also great to see them use the format in such a perfect way. We always thought the foil is a better format than a coin for a blueprint, even back in 2017 when the coins were issued, and this series seems to confirm that view.

The Death Star was the first issue, and this latest one, the third, lays out Darth Vader’s ultra-iconic helmet. The second release, one we didn’t cover, was the Millennium Falcon, and the fourth one, set to release on 12th June, will be Luke Skywalker’s Lightsaber. It seems Agoro are alternating between the Empire and the Rebel Alliance with these, so maybe the fifth issue will be the Imperial Star Destroyer?.

This series uses their premium foil format, utilising an ounce of silver to create something up to 262 mm in size, so detail will be far superior to a 40 mm coin, obviously. The obverse has a pattern upon it, along with inscriptions denoting the composition, and the issue details. A fine series for the Star Wars nut.

STAR WARS DROIDS 02: 2025 R2-D2

One of the most popular elements in the Star Wars Universe has to be the varied droid characters that accompany both hero and villain wherever they go. The most famous ones, of course, are the comic duo of the translation droid C-3PO, and the astromech, R2-D2. The first coin in this series featured a gilded C-3PO, and now it’s the turn of his best mate to get some love.

These one-ounce silver coins are shaped, although only in a crude sense, and lack any high-relief, which is a shame, but they remain a good homage to some of the most popular characters in science-fiction movies. To aid authenticity, this one isn’t gilded, but instead employs colour instead. We’d expect this one to be popular, and suspect there’ll be a few more of these coming this way.

As I said in our previous round-up, Agoro is quite prolific, so we obviously can’t cover all the new releases like we used to, but regular readers will know about our Thematic Guides, which try to summarise as best we can, all the coins released around a specific theme, many of which are popular culture in nature. We periodically update them with new issues, and I continue to do that on a regular basis.

As a result, you can see more releases in our guides to the Marvel Universe, the Star Wars Universe, and the Harry Potter Wizarding World, amongst others, on that page. If you have an interest in any of those subjects, or some others we’ve covered, please check them out. Most cover the issues from multiple mints.
