The new larger than life US President appears on his first legal tender coins and they’re imported…

After what has been one of the bitterest and most unusual Presidential campaigns in history, the United States of America now has one of the most unusual Presidents to show for it. Donald J. Trump has become the 45th President and seems to have rewritten the playbook on just what the job entails. This has obviously generated a wider level of interest than usual, no doubt boosted by Trump’s previous celebrity, so it was expected that he’d put in an appearance on coins sooner or later. There have already been some rounds available, but now the leap to precious metal coins has been taken and it’s no bodge-up job.

Regular readers of the site will know all about Coin Invest Trust’s brilliant SmartMinting and BGM (Big Gold Mane Minting) techniques that allow the striking of high levels of detail on ever thinner coins. The end result is a coin far bigger than you would expect for a given weight. Both versions of this coin take full advantage of the process. The silver coin weighs a troy ounce and coins of that weight usually land in the 38-45 mm diameter range. This one is 65.0 mm. Even more impressively, the gold 1-ounce coin normally has a circa 32 mm diameter but this one also stretches out to a staggering 65.0 mm. There’s no denying The Donald does it bigger…

The design has a very good likeness of Trump on the reverse face, backed up with a billowing US flag and a border containing the inscriptions ’45TH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES TRUMP 2017′. As there’s very little chance of the highly politicised US Mint with its drawn out approval and design processes getting a coin out this fast, the producer has gone the usual numismatic route to coin legitimacy, using a small state to issue it, in this case, Equatorial Guinea, a country on the mid-west coast of Africa and a former Spanish colony. As a country with one of the worst human rights records in the world and staggering inequality, we’re not sure that was a perfect choice even if the Republican Party’s elephant is part of the emblem. The obverse is however, quite superb in my view.
