Le Grand Mint launches a new range of minigold coins featuring famous people across multiple fields

We like a minigold here, and with the price of the yellow metal hitting new highs, it offers a way to buy it for those on a tighter budget. We’ve been fortunate over the last decade, as the format has shown incredible diversity in style and subject, led by long-time proponents of the type, CIT, along with many others, including some national mints.

Joining this group is Le Grand Mint, with a great idea for a series that could run and run for many years, if they so chose. Loosely termed ‘Gold Motif Bars’, each rectangular issue will feature a well known person from a specific group. The first three issues include a pair under the banner ‘Genius’, and one, a celebrity, which is an almost endless field in itself, these days.

GENIUS: NIKOLA TESLA

CELEBRITIES: AUDREY HEPBURN

GENIUS: WILHELM RONTGEN

Kicking off the genius category is the German physicist that won the inaugural Nobel Prize for Physics, and the discoverer of something we all come into contact with at some point – X-rays. Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen (1845-1923), is one of the few to have an element named after them, and a unit of measurement. Joining him is Nikola Tesla, a scientist needing little introduction, and who’s been a staple in the coin world over the last decade. The sole celebrity in the launch trio is the ultra-iconic Audrey Hepburn.

Each is depicted in portrait form, based on a popular image. The Audrey Hepburn image is particularly iconic. On the evidence here, it looks like each series will have a unique background, with the Genius issues having a pattern of radiating lines (which suit these two especially well), and the celebrities a repeating pattern of quotation marks. The patterned obverse is common to the range.

They come encapsulated, set into a patterned internal card, and boxed. The mintage of each design is set at just 999 pieces. A neat idea for a new range, and one that will let collectors stick with gold at a time prices are soaring. Available to order now.
