MDM Wholesale adds their own twist to the minigold market, with a 12-coin collection of spirit animals in the 1/200 oz format
Continuing our peek into the ever-growing minigold market, in which we’ve already covered the differing approaches of Silver Pours, and Germania Mint, we look at the latest release from MDM Wholesale. The German producer has an extensive history of minigold releases, often in the form of sets themed around a single subject, like Ancient Egypt, pop-culture, the Zodiac, and even the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament in the USA.
Like some other producers, MDM have moved to smaller formats of late, and the series here is a 1/200 oz range, which is 0.155 grams. However, these are by no means small in stature, reaching an impressive 42 x 30 mm in size, so more akin to a small foil than a coin proper. Obviously, that gives the designers much more leeway to impart the coins with some impressive artwork, and they seem to have risen to the challenge with style.
The theme here is Spirit Animals, which depict creatures in a heavily stylised way, in this case from what looks like the Indian subcontinent, and their ‘mandala’ art. The selection consists of twelve real animals, so no dragons like the Chinese lunar calendar, and encompasses a wide range of species, but with a consistent style. Each has colouration, but it doesn’t seem excessive, and does a good job getting the animal to ‘pop’ from the background, which also carries a unique etched pattern on each coin.
Each of these twelve Samoan coins can be purchased individually, or they can be picked up as a set, complete with a binder to hold the collection. My understanding is that the binder can be purchased separately, but I’ll have to confirm that. If so, it would make picking up a set of these considerably easier in a financial sense. Even though the twelve coins total less than two grams overall, with the price of gold still in the stratosphere, buying them individually is a nice option to have. Available to pre-order now, this is a neat set in the minigold market, both visually appealing, and collectible.
