The silver foil renaissance at Agoro continues with six new pop-culture releases, from movies to comics
After a few years in the doldrums, the last year or so has seen a renaissance in the silver foil market. We’ve always been partial to the type here, as while they’re not for everyone, they offer an intriguing alternative for certain markets, particularly the popular culture genre, where they make a satisfyingly large canvas for the reproduction of comic book covers, and film posters, amongst other things.
Agoro, the collectible arm of the New Zealand Mint, have naturally embraced the format more than others, given their extensive portfolio of pop-culture franchises, and they’ve put it to good use. Below are six of the latest releases, with three of them due in the next week or two. I do wish the mint, and indeed other mints, would apply the format to a wider range of genres, but within their field, Agoro have made more original designs than was the case in the past.
STAR WARS CONCEPT ART: LIGHTSABER DUEL / IMPERIAL WALKER
Star Wars has been incredibly well served at Agoro, and even I’ve expressed some frustration at the repetitive use of designs in the past, but they’ve excelled here. The concept art of illustrator Ralph McQuarrie is legendary in the Star Wars fan base, and his vision of the universe is what helped it get its unique, and now iconic, look. There’s a huge selection of beautiful books filled with the scores of images he created, and his contributions, including the early design for Darth Vader himself, cannot be over-estimated.
The foils have the easy job, the most difficult aspect being which of his paintings to use. The first two, Lightsaber Duel (out now), and Imperial Walker & Snowspeeder (out 11th Feb) are both lifted from his Empire Strikes Back works, which you can see lots more of HERE. It’s impressive how much of his concept made the final films, and the prints look really good here. The box is designed to double as a stand, and with fans often having display cabinets full of memorabilia, these would look perfectly at home there.

BATMAN THREE JOKERS: THE CLOWN
Considered a spiritual successor to two of the finest Batman graphic novels ever published, (The Killing Joke, and A Death in the Family), Three Jokers was a three issue comic book released in 2020, in which Batman goes to battle with three incarnations of his nemesis, called The Criminal, The Clown, and The Comedian. Each episode had one of the Joker’s on its cover, with outstanding art by Jason Fobok.
The first foil is out now, and is subtitled The Clown. The next one, The Criminal, will launch on 19th February, and also have its own custom obverse face. You’ll notice two variants of the reverse face above, and that’s because we have another random ‘chase’ variant for this release. The coloured one will be 900 of the 1,000 pieces minted, and the monochrome design will be the other 100. You won’t know which one you have until you open the box. My views on this are well known – I hate it. It seems doubly annoying here as the rarer variant lacks the character’s iconic colour. Getting the rare one would be a downgrade for me, and I reckon for many others. I’ve said it before, random chance is fine for a $4 pack of trading cards, but not for a near $200 piece of silver. Outside of that, an outstanding release.

STAR WARS RETURN OF THE JEDI: SPECIAL EDITION POSTER
Star Wars foils have been a thing since the format first debuted, and the legendary posters have appeared many times in the past. Normally, that would have me dismiss a reissue out-of-hand, but in this case we get the ‘Special-Edition’ poster instead, which makes for a pleasant change. This is a three-foil series, so as any Star Wars fan will tell you, this is the final one to debut. It will launch on 11th February.

INVINCIBLE SEASON 3
Also the third foil in a series, the hit adult animated superhero television ‘Invincible’ gets a foil showcasing the third season with some official artwork. An often quite brutal show, Invincible is well worth a watch, and it’s deservedly popular. There really isn’t much more to this one than that. A cool piece for the fans, especially when so little else exists in the coin world for it.

MARVEL COMIX: WOLVERINE #1
Another comic book cover, and this release is the first in Agoro’s Marvel Comix range. A genuine classic comic book, it’s the first issue of Wolverine own title, the character having only appeared in other books until this point. It’s another one with a ‘chase’ alternative, with 10% of the production losing most of the colour for a cleaner look at the artwork. Again, I’m not a fan and think the standard cover looks better. At $195.00 each, it’s too rich to be gambling, in my opinion.
