Coronation Day Strike Celebration Sovereign gold coin (2023 Royal Mint)

We know the Sovereign is a real collector favourite, with special variants snapped up quickly, so the news that the Royal Mint will strike a special limited run on 06 May, the day of the coronation of King Charles II, will no doubt cause a buying frenzy, especially with its crowned effigy on the obverse. Spec-wise it’s a standard Sovereign, and it will sell for £850.00

PRESS RELEASE: The Royal Mint, official maker of UK coins, has today announced it will be offering numismatists across the world an opportunity to purchase a special Strike on the Day Sovereign in celebration of His Majesty King Charles III’s coronation. The Strike on the Day Sovereign will be struck on 6th May 2023 – His Majesty’s coronation day.

The Strike on the day Sovereign will feature the first official crowned coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III, design by sculptor Martin Jennings. This celebration Sovereign will bear the renowned St George and the dragon design produced by Benedetto Pistrucci – a design synonymous with the Sovereign. Both sides of the Strike on the Day Sovereign will feature a fully frosted finish, adding an attractive matt finish to the iconic St George and the dragon design as well as His Majesty’s official crowned portrait. This Sovereign will also have a plain edge rather than the usual milled edge that collectors are familiar with.

Only 1,250 of the Sovereigns be struck on 6th May 2023, on the day His Majesty is officially crowned as King, offering collectors across the world a wonderful opportunity to mark this history royal occasion in British history. Each Sovereign, struck on King Charles III’s coronation day, will be housed in bespoke packaging as well as accompanied by a certificate of authentication confirming its strike date.

In addition to featuring the iconic and globally recognisable St George and the dragon design produced by Benedetto Pistrucci, the Sovereign’s obverse will bear the first official crowned coinage portrait of King Charles III. We anticipate this Strike on the Day Sovereign to be in high demand among coin collectors globally due to it marking such a significant moment in British history as well as the limited number available, making it extremely sought after.”
