Catching up with the New Zealand Mint’s popular culture coin releases from October

An overdue look at the New Zealand Mint’s copious popular-culture output is what we have here, and it’s another good mix of the many franchises they have in their repertoire. Including such giants as Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and Harry Potter, movie fans will likely find something that catches their eye,

There are many coloured coins, and a lot of cleanly struck proof and antiqued offerings as well. Just the one shaped coin in our round-up, although we’ve already added Octobers four Chibi coins to our gigantic, regularly updated guide for this now 100+ strong range. Likewise, Star Wars and Harry Potter issues have also been added to our respective Thematic Guides.

November will see four more Chibi coins added, along with Superman Classic, Han Solo in Carbonite, Scrooge McDuck, and additions to the 101 Dalmatians, Faces of the First Order, and Transformers 1984 ranges.

2022 HARRY POTTER: DUMBLEDORE’S OFFICE

The Harry Potter tsunami continues apace with the latest in their newer antique-finished series. Depicting Dumbledore’s office, it’s available in one-ounce and three-ounce silver forms, both carrying identical artwork. Sometimes the smaller coin will carry a cropped version of the larger coin’s artwork, but that isn’t the case here.

An unusual subject for a coin, this is more for the hard-core Potter fan, we’d imagine. It is good to see something other than characters, however.

2022 DISNEY 101 DALMATIANS

Disney’s beloved 101 Dalmatians is the latest movie to get the coloured one-ounce treatment. It’s a simple depiction, a scene from the movie, but it’s extremely well-chosen, and very well packaged. The mint does this type of coin well, and lovers of the movie will approve, no doubt.

2022 A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET

The mint is definitely dipping into the horror genre more of late, and we approve. A visually exciting movie genre, filled with iconic characters, and memorable stories. It’s also full of more crap than just about any other genre, so there is that! However, the original Nightmare on Elm Street isn’t one of them, being a bona fide classic in its own right.

It has a very iconic character in it, Freddy Krueger, wielding a distinctive weapon of choice, There’s a character image taken from a movie, we think, along with an almost graffiti like representation of the psychopath. It’s all neat enough, and the packaging is as cool as ever.

2022 THE TRANSFORMERS: BUMBLEBEE

Ignoring the movies, instead drawing inspiration from the original cartoons, Bumblebee is the latest in the mints Transformer franchise to appear. A simple coloured image of the fan-favourite character, is the primary visual element, but we particularly like the ‘1984’ done in one of those early videogame fonts that are making a comeback of late.

Again, the one-ounce coin is well presented, but one for the fans, rather than the general collector, but that’s fine. The market is big enough to please everyone.

2022 COMIX: SUPERMAN #1

The latest in the mints Comix series of classic comic cover reproductions, is one of the world’s most valuable – Superman #1. It’s a straightforward depiction, although the little page turn swish on the obverse is neat (which we were stupid enough to cut off in our image…) I still prefer the old silver foil versions from a few years ago, but we know that many prefer traditional coin.

2022 STAR WARS: BATTLE OF SCARIF

Star Wars Battle Scenes returns with the Battle of Scarif, from the decent movie, Rogue One. There’s X-Wings, AT-AT’s and a scene of the Imperial planet. This series is unusual in only being available as a three-ounce coin. It’s pricier, but a nice idea, taking a long-overdue detour from the countless numbers of character coin available today.

2022 LORD OF THE RINGS: HELM’S DEEP

Much like the Harry Potter series earlier in this article, Lord of the Rings also enjoys an antique-finished range to sit alongside the usual proof coins. This time, it’s the fortress at Helm’s Deep, Unlike the Potter coin this month, there’s a difference in artwork between the two silver coins. The larger one has a wider view of the fortress, to take advantage of the coin’s increased diameter. A clever touch, they do well.

Also different to the Potter range is the presence of a quarter-ounce gold variant with a proof finish. This replicates the artwork from the one-ounce silver coin, sensibly. The packaging on them all is identical, and of a good quality. Again, good to see something that doesn’t just depict a character.

2022 MASTERPIECES: JUNGLE BOOK

Like the mints ‘Masterpiece’ range, this is only available as a three-ounce, coloured silver coin. It’s bigger than most of the mints other coins of this weight, at 60 mm in diameter, instead of 55 mm. It has that flowing line of film cells, each depicting a scene from the movie. We feel the idea suits the subject exceptionally well, and lifts it over the more basic designs, like 101 Dalmatians, for example.

2022 FACES OF THE FIRST ORDER: TIE FIGHTER PILOT

The third in the Faces of the First Order series of helmet coin, itself an offshoot of the (currently) 11-coin Faces of the Empire series, Tie Fighter Pilot is a shaped-coin done in an almost animated style. We’re sure fans will continue to enjoy the series, but we’re not a fan of the repetitiveness of it all. Late November will see the Flametrooper added to the range, so we’re not done yet.
