Coins Today are back with three amazing new stackable silver coins, and there’s a Christmas minigold for good measure
After a quieter period over the last couple of years, South Korean producer, Coins Today, are fully back in the saddle with a tranche of four new releases, three of them in their signature stackable, high-relief silver form. We’ve been waxing lyrical about their products for years now, so it’s great to see them back, and even better to see the quality is as high as ever.
All of the three have smaller, fixed mintages than has usually been the case in the past, and all are supplied encapsulated. Joining the silver is a rare for them minigold, but this isn’t a showpiece like the silver coins, and will appeal more to the gift market than to collectors. All should be available to pre-order now.
ATHENA STACKABLE 2oz
The Greek goddess Athena is a popular subject for modern coins, but you won’t have seen her done in such a manner as Coins Today have managed with this new two-ounce silver stackable coin. Done as a bust, the Greek beauty is depicted in armour, with a sort of Corinthian-style helmet and breastplate, both richly decorated.
I absolutely love this one, with its antique finish suiting the design particularly well, in my opinion. Athena is unusual in this company in being a fully denominated coin, issued for Samoa. Only 1,000 of these will be produced, and there’s am optional display stand for it. I haven’t seen an image of it, but I’m guessing it will be similar to the one made for the Shield of Hercules, which you can see below.
| DENOMINATION | COMPOSITION | DIAMETER | FINISH | MINTAGE |
| 2 Tala (Samoa) | 62.2 g of 0.999 silver | 50.0 x 83.0 mm | Antique | 1,000 |
SHIELD OF HERCULES STACKABLE 1oz
Coin’s Today have a fine track record when it comes to stackable shields from history and mythology, numbering amongst some of the best of all the stackable issues they’ve done over the years. This one harks back to one of their first, the Achilles Shield, and is called the Shield of Hercules.
This convex strike is beautifully adorned with scenes taken from the Greek hero’s twelve tasks, with a depiction of him fighting the Hydra the biggest of them, and the focal point of the mix in the centre scene. A border carries many smaller scenes, with the end result a terrific looking design that you could almost imagine coming from an early Greek silversmith. A digital colouring effect gives the impression of toning, something unlikely to happen naturally given the antiqued finish.
Most impressively, this is struck in only one-ounce of fine silver, which is around half that usually utilised. As a result, this will be considerably more affordable, and you’re much more likely to test out its stackability by buying a couple of them. The black marble-effect stand in the image above can be purchased as an option.
| DENOMINATION | COMPOSITION | DIAMETER | FINISH | MINTAGE |
| Undenominated | 31.1 g of 0.999 silver | 45.0 mm | Antique, Colour | 3,000 |
VISHNU STACKABLE 2oz
This one came as a bit of a surprise, as it’s the sequel to a stackable bullion piece that was released back in June 2023 that was never followed up on at the time, although there was an impressive one-kilo variant of Ganesha released a year later, but the mint’s quiet period seems to have put paid to a continuation of the series.
Fortunately, Today has jumped right back in, and Vishnu (in two-ounce form) has now appeared to reinvigorate the series of Indian deities. It’s an astounding design, proving the mint has lost nothing of its flair for the extravagant in its stackable silver bullion range. It constantly amazes us how designs of such intricate detail can be stackable, but they manage it time and time again. Vishnu is supplied encapsulated, and just 3,000 will be offered.
| DENOMINATION | COMPOSITION | DIAMETER | FINISH | MINTAGE |
| Undenominated | 62.2 g of 0.999 silver | 50.0 x 80.0 mm | Antique | 3,000 |
DIVINE BEAUTY 04: THEMIS
Joining the ever increasing range of one-gram and under gold coins and bars that have become more popular since the spot price of gold rose so quickly, the offering from Coins Today is a holiday-themed one. Christmas has attracted quite a lot of interest in that market, with bars from Germania Mint and PAMP, and shaped coins from CIT, so there’s obviously a healthy gift market for them.
This is a shaped piece, and undenominated. It takes the shape of a snowman, with a scarf, and has simple inscriptions on the obverse side. It comes in a blistercard with festive art looking lifted straight from a Christmas card. The coin has an unlimited mintage.
| DENOMINATION | COMPOSITION | DIAMETER | FINISH | MINTAGE |
| Undenominated | 1.0 g of 0.9999 gold | 10.0 x 15.1 mm | B/Unc. | Unlimited |
