No look at AllCollect’s myriad range of unusual coins would be complete without a visit to Smick. With a first debut back in 2014, Smick was to launch as the thickest one-ounce silver coin in the world, something it remains today. Where a usual 1oz silver coin would have a diameter of around 39 mm, these coins are tiny at just 20 mm, but the metal has gone to thickness, up from the usual 3-4 mm to a super-thick 9.4 mm.
The design of each coin in the series is inspired by one of the world’s bullion coins. The 2014 design was a copy of the Gabon Springbok, itself a copy of the ultra-iconic Krugerrand, and the 2015 coin was inspired by the Chinese Panda. For 2016 it is to the west that Smick has turned its gaze, choosing the hugely well-known Walking Liberty design from the American Silver Eagle. All of the coins have a Republic of Gabon obverse design as they’re all issued for the African state. A quite unique feature for a 1 oz coin is the range of designs that are inscribed into the coin edge. For his 2016 coin, it’s an eagle themed selection, the previous coins obviously going with Pandas and Springboks. Also inscribed into the edge is the coin serial number, numbered from 0 to 999.
The presentation is the key here, after all, what’s the point of a thick coin if you can’t see it? To that end AllCollect have chosen to provide a very smart acrylic frame that holds the coin in suspension. This allows an all round view of the coin, enhanced by being laser-etched with some details of the coin. A Certificate of Authenticity is provided in the shipper box. Available to order now, these are certainly different, and at one coin per year, not too difficult to collect. Available from many dealers worldwide.
