Agoro continues to broaden its range of film and television coins and expand its most popular ranges. Here’s some of the new issues.
Kings of the pop-culture franchise coin, Agoro, the name for the collectible coin part of the New Zealand Mint, continue to increase their portfolio of issues across multiple licences, and even add new ones, We’ve recently seen them add the Ultimate Fighting Challenge (UFC), and Major League Baseball (MLB), but it’s the existing icons we’re catching up with here. This week will be big for the MLB coins, so we’ll look at those in a couple of days.
There are new Star Trek and Star Wars coins, of course, and some Disney films like Alice in Wonderland, and WALL-E getting some love. Agoro’s new 1.5 ounce silver foils are a nice addition, reaching an impressive size, and it seems that shaped coins are the format of choice of late. Something for most tastes.
An interesting change from the usual Star Trek coin, this series reproduces the insignia worn on the tunics of Starfleet personnel. The first issue was a gilded coin, featuring the Command symbol, and the second, pictured above, had a clean proof finish, and the Sciences insignia.
The latest issue, Operations, is copper plated, so it’s clear the series will not be afraid to experiment as it continues. They’re relatively affordable at an ounce of weight, and will make a cool display set for the legions of Star Trek fans. The next one, Medical, will release on the 15th January.

One of the all-time classic animated Disney films, Alice in Wonderland, has already seen a couple of releases at Agoro, but they’ve been the usual, standard fare, with a poster coin being the only recent issue. In line with Agoro’s increasing use of shaped coins, the latest coin is far more interesting.
Despite an incredibly weird pantheon of characters, perhaps the most iconic one of all is the floating, vanishing, grinning Cheshire Cat. The two-ounce coin is a charming reproduction of the cat from the film, in a classic pose. Packaging is fully themed, and overall, a nice homage.

There have been many incarnations of Batman over the decades, but none quite like the 1960s television series. Starring Adam West as the titular hero, it was about as camp a show as you’ve ever seen in the superhero genre, and hilarious. Agoro, back in its NZ Mint days, dabbled with a few coins, but their latest is a clever take on the show.
Shaped like an old TV set of the period, the picture it ‘shows’ is one of the classic scenes from the show, that of Batman and Robin scaling the side of a skyscraper. A mix of proof and frosted finish adds texture. Fans of the old Batman will instantly connect with it. It’s well presented, as you’d expect, with the only downside being the three-ounce weight, although the coin is an impressive size as a result.

One of the most beloved of the pre-2010 animated movies, is WALL-E, a CGI-fest about a pair of robots cleaning up the Earth, long consigned to being a waste tip. The two main characters were WALL-E, and his ‘girlfriend’ EVE, and these are the subjects of the two coins in this set.
Each of them is struck in 1.5 ounces of silver, and with a shaped profile. WALL-E is done with an antiqued finish, while the more modern design of Eve, is coloured. They come in a display box, and the pair should have appeal to lovers of this super popular movie. They’re not sold individually.

Long a proponent of the silver foil, the NZ Mint backed off from the format for some time, but seems to be back, with a format the biggest we’ve seen from them to date. Also tipping the scales at 1.5 ounces (seemingly the new poster child at Agoro), this silver foil reaches out to an impressive 320 mm in height, that’s over 12.5″.
The subject is one with plenty of material moving forward – Marvel’s groundbreaking Infinity War, starting with the films that made up Phase One. The first foil, Iron Man, came out a couple of months ago, and this second release is Thor, a decent addition to the franchise. These depict original movie posters, and there have been some superb ones in this saga, so expect more of these, especially as they’ve already sold out at the mint.

We’ve already run articles on the first two in this unusually elongated ‘Montage’ series, and this third coin features, predictably, the third film released chronologically, Return of the Jedi. These are actually terrific coins, finally breaking the mints monotonous habit of re-releasing the original film posters in multiple different formats.
The artwork is far more original and unknown, and all the better for it. The obverse features an inscribed reproduction of the iconic text roll from the start of the film, something inextricably linked to them. If we were interested in buying a Star Wars poster-style range, it would be his one.

One of the mint’s three-ounce character coins, this is the sixth issue, although you could add a couple of extra Darth Vader coins to the mix depending on the criteria for inclusion. They’re neat enough, depicting a mix of images, some coloured, some cleanly struck, from across the Star Wars films, and dedicated to a single character.
Here, it’s Yoda, so it isn’t the most varied selection, but it is an accurate one. A good range, but not amongst our favourites, especially given the three-ounce weight carries a $329.00 USD price tag.
