A peek behind the curtains to see what’s to come, with CIT’s new retro-inspired Daydreamer: Future proof silver coin

Robots, spaceships, flying cars, and buildings towering into the sky, have all been popular elements in science-fiction, dating back to the early 20th century, and in some forms, as far as Victorian times. Fritz Lang’s seminal 1927 masterpiece, Metropolis, brought many of these things from the fringes, into mainstream popularity, and even now, almost a century later, they have endured.

The genre is surprisingly scarce in the modern coin world, even though it maintains its popularity in pop-culture. A neat coin from PAMP/MTB came out late last year, called ‘Retrofuturism’ and it drew heavily from the style of the 1950s science-fiction movies world, and UFO’s are always a collector favourite, but it’s taken CIT to really hit a bullseye, with their latest two-ounce smartminted silver coin.

The coin depicts that classic early view of what the year 2000 would look like, with its futuristic trains and immense organic buildings, along with a couple of humanoid robots. The killer element here are the curtains, being pulled back to reveal the world of the future to an imaginary audience. It’s like a big reveal in a cinema, but the coin’s name – Daydreamer – hints that perhaps it’s all a little more personal. You can certainly see smartminting flexing its legs here. The straight-on view of the reverse is impressive enough, but the angled view is just outstanding. Look at the way the high-relief has been employed to impart so much depth to the image.

The obverse is an unmodified one for a Republic of Palau issue, and the whole coin is antique-finished. The coin is presented in a latex-skinned ‘floating’ frame, with the certificate printed on the back of the custom insert, a neat alternative to a separate certificate. It’s a superb package, and a very impressive demonstration of the combined technical and creative skills that have built the reputation that CIT enjoys today. Available to order now.
