The Royal Mint marks a century since the birth of Queen Elizabeth II with a new range of gold and silver coins

With 21 April 2026 marking 100 years since the birth of Queen Elizabeth II, The Royal Mint has launched a new range of coins in celebration of the centenary. The new range is unusual as the bigger coins carry a different design to the smaller ones, each created by a different artist. There’s also a special Sovereign that will be struck on the centenary day, 21 April 2026, with a Lily Font privy mark.

All the gold and silver coins up to, and including the two-ounce, feature a reverse design by Timothy Noad, which weaves the initials ‘ER’ into a pattern inspired by the ironwork of St. George’s Chapel, where Queen Elizabeth II is buried. The phrase ‘Exaltabitur in gloria’ is inscribed in the border, which originates from the Vulgate Bible, and means ‘exalted in glory’. It was used on the reverse of Edward III era (1327-1377) gold quarter noble coins.

The 5oz and 1kg variants carry a design by the artist Henry Gray, which surrounds the ‘ER’ with oak branches, interwoven with hidden symbols of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales. It’s a different approach to basically the same idea, but has a flavour of its own. Sadly, there are no affordable formats with this design, with prices ranging from £812.50, up to almost £156k for the kilo gold.

As well as the individual coins, there are four beautiful sets. A gold set includes the £5 proof gold coin, along with Sovereigns from 2022, 2012, 2002, 1957, and 1926 sits at the high-end, with a smaller gold set combining a 1/4oz coin with a 1926 Sovereign. There’s an impressive 9-coin silver set based around a £5 silver coin, and a 2-coin silver set which pairs a one-ounce UK proof coin with a Canadian one. You can see them below.
