Star Wars Classic coin series wraps up 2017 with the enigmatic fan favourite bounty hunter, Boba Fett

Classic Star Wars has been a hugely popular range of gold and silver coins and for good reason. Taking characters from this iconic movie franchise and presenting them in a classic, gimmick-free way has obviously resonated with collectors. Beautiful designs have certainly helped, aided by a series of movies jam-packed with memorable scenes. Rounding out 2017 is the tenth in the series and featuring a true fan-favourite character.

Having small scenes in the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, the mysterious bounty hunter Boba Fett has achieved a fanbase out of all proportion to his time on screen. Everybody loves a big baddie and while those honours in the Star Wars movies belong to Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine, there’s plenty of room for a whole pantheon of ‘minions’.

The coin depicts the scene set on Jabba the Hutt’s sail barge over the Great Pit of Carkoon that led to Fett falling into the Sarlacc’s mouth at the bottom of the pit where he would be slowly digested over a thousand years. It’s a perfectly realised version of the scene and Star Wars fans are in no doubt of what is happening here. The obverse carries the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II required by being issued for Niue Island, a Commonwealth state. The design remains the same for the silver and gold coins.

As before, two gold (1 oz and ¼ oz) and one silver (1 oz) are available and mintages remain the same at 500, 1,000 and 10,000 respectively. Prices stay at $2500, $620 and $85 USD.In our view, easily the best of the various Star Wars coin ranges out there and superior to anything that has appeared for the competing Star Trek franchise (although the Lt. Worf coin coming from the Perth mint tomorrow is a positive step). Available to order today from the mint store or from selected dealers including sponsors Minted-UK, Powercoin and Coins Boutique.

2017 STAR WARS CLASSIC: BOBA FETT COINS

MINTS DESCRIPTION

Mysterious bounty hunter and one of the most feared beings in the galaxy, Boba Fett was a clone of the bounty hunter Jango Fett, made at Jango’s instruction and raised as his son. After witnessing his ‘fathers’ death at the hands of the Jedi Master Mace Windu, he trained in his footsteps as a bounty hunter.

Taking on commissions for Darth Vader, Fett tracked Hans Solo’s ship,  the Millennium Falcon, to Cloud City where Vader captured him. After being interrogated and frozen in carbonite, Solo is turned over to Boba Fett so that Fett can claim the bounty on him from the criminal overlord, Jabba the Hutt.

After an attempted rescue of Solo by the Rebellion, he travels on Jabba’s sail barge to the Great Pit of Carkoon, home of the Sarlacc, where the prisoners are to be executed. When the prisoners mount an escape he attempts to intervene, and ends up in a tussle with Luke Skywalker, but Solo accidentally ignites Fett’s rocket pack, sending the bounty hunter falling into the Sarlacc’s mouth.

Dressed in his trademark Mandalorian armour, Fett has become of the the most loved and iconic of all the characters in the Star Wars universe.
