Considered one of the greatest of the ninteenth-century composers, Frederik Chopin further cemented his name in the public conciousness with his death at the early age of just 39. Despite that, he left a widely admired body of music, mostly including the piano, that numbers over 230 surviving works. Coming this October, is the 17th International Chopin Piano Competition, a piano competition held in Warsaw, Poland. It was initiated in 1927 and has been held every five years since 1955. It’s one of few competitions devoted entirely to the works of a single composer. In 1957 the competition became one of the founding members of the World Federation of International Music Competitions in Geneva and is organized by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute of Warsaw.

Despite being known for some highly unusual coins, and we did see a really beautiful Chopin prototype at this years World Money Fair in Berlin whose status is currently unknown, this Mint of Poland coin is one that actually just looks like a coin for a change. Based on a famous statue of the composer rather than on an image of the man himself, this two-ounce fine silver design is struck in an ultra-high relief style with some colouring done with a light touch. Only 500 will be struck, but given the popularity of the competition we’d imagine them selling well. Supplied in one of our favorite display frames, one of the floating latex ones, it looks a good gift for the classical music afficionado. The ultra-high relief doesn’t show up in these images, so we’ll try to get some pictures of an actual coin to see how good it looks. Our guess is this one looks a lot better in the real world.

MINTS DESCRIPTION

On the occasion of the XVII edition of the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition, the Mint of Poland is proud to present an exceptional commemorative coin dedicated to the world-famous Polish pianist and composer of the Romantic era. Chopin’s portrait, derived from his famous statue located in Warsaw’s Royal Baths Park, constitutes a central motif of this magnificent silver coin. The monument has a simple, yet deeply expressive form. Thanks to advanced high-relief minting technology, the artistic convention of the free-standing statue was faithfully depicted on our meticulously  sculptured silver coin. This beautiful souvenir will be an outstanding gi for all lovers of classical music!

There are many intriguing facts behind the history of the Chopin Statue from Warsaw’s Royal Baths Park. During World War II, the invaders pursued to destroy all existing copies of this all-important Polish cultural symbol. Completely devastated with all replicas lost, the statue was reconstructed thanks to the only survived mold found in the ruined house of its designer Wacław Szymanowski. Against all odds, it remains steadfast in Polish collective imagination.

FREDERIC CHOPIN

Frédéric François Chopin (22 February or 1 March 1810 – 17 October 1849), was a Polish composer and virtuoso pianist of the Romantic era, who wrote primarily for the solo piano. He gained and has maintained renown worldwide as one of the leading musicians of his era, whose “poetic genius was based on a professional technique that was without equal in his generation.” Chopin was born and grew up in Warsaw. A child prodigy, he completed his musical education and composed many of his works in Warsaw before leaving Poland at the age of 20, less than a month before the outbreak of the November 1830 Uprising.

All of Chopin’s compositions include the piano. Most are for solo piano, though he also wrote two piano concertos, a few chamber pieces, and some songs to Polish lyrics. His keyboard style is highly individual and often technically demanding; his own performances were noted for their nuance and sensitivity. Chopin invented the concept of instrumental ballade. His major piano works also include sonatas, mazurkas, waltzes, nocturnes, polonaises, études, impromptus, scherzos, and preludes, some published only after his death. His innovations in style, musical form, and harmony, and his association of music with nationalism, were influential throughout and after the late Romantic period.
