Disney’s classic past reproduced with a rectangular coin featuring the 1932 movie Mickey’s Revue

Along with Star Wars, the huge well of history from Disney’s past is regularly dipped into by the New Zealand Mint and it’s never better when they look at the early days of this now gigantic media juggernaut. Classic Disney has thrown up some superb proof coin designs, so now the NZ Mint is launching a new rectangular coin series to run alongside them. Showcasing some of the brilliant movie posters that accompanied the debut release of this landmark animators early work.

First up is a Mickey Mouse movie from 1932 called Mickey’s Revue, notable as being the debut of another Disney icon, Goofy. The poster is one typical of the time, offering a snapshot of the movie that perfectly encapsulates what it’s about. This looks like it will have huge appeal to the Disney traditionalist, far more than the coins aimed at the modern memorabilia market (Mickey & Friends) or the gift market (Disney Princesses). Other than the composition and copyright information, there are no extraneous inscriptions on the important reverse face.

The obverse is the standard NZ Mint Niue one of an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, along with inscriptions detailing the issuer, date and denomination. Packaging is excellent again. The mints acrylic display frame is an outstanding way to display a coin and particularly suits the rectangular format of the coin employed here. All sits in a coloured shipper with an enclosed certificate of authenticity.
