Disney’s 1930’s poster coin series continues with the Silly Symphony short ‘Flowers and Trees’

The second of the New Zealand Mint’s new Disney Posters of the 1930’s series of rectangular silver coins appears today and in a nice change of direction eschews the ubiquitous mouse for one of the much loved Silly Symphony cartoons. First shown 85 years ago in July 1932, Flowers and Trees was the first animated movie to win an Oscar. The Silly Symphonies series went on to comprise 75 shorts, and they won a further six more Oscars until the series ended in 1939. It was the first commercially released film to be produced in the full-color three-strip Technicolor process.

Depicting the original poster for the short, it’s a great look back at the early days of this media behemoth. It’s another of those coins targeted at the classic Disney collector, rather than the customer more enamoured with Frozen and the latest CGI-animated blockbusters. The obverse is the standard NZ Mint Niue one of an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, along with inscriptions detailing the issuer, date and denomination. Packaging is a favourite of ours.
