Mint of MK and GR Reserve return to their pirate series with an ethereal Anne Bonny coin called ‘Flame of Defiance’

We thought we’d have a pirate day today, with the coverage of T&S Coin’s latest one this morning, and now this unusual piece from GR Reserve and Mint of MK. The latter is well known for its esoteric range, and a desire to push design envelopes wherever it can, and a simple look through the coins we’ve covered here should show that well enough. Their latest pirate coin, the second in the series, features Anne Bonny.

Anne Bonny was a pirate who served under John Rackham, the infamous Calico Jack, and was one of only a few female pirates in the Golden Age of Piracy. The first contemporary biography of her exploits came in 1724 (she died in 1733), where she was described as being born in Ireland, and then moving to Carolina with her father. She travelled to the Bahamas, meeting Rackham, and joining Mary Read in the crew. After numerous adventures, in 1720, Rackham and his crew were captured, tried, and executed. Bonny and Read both claimed to be pregnant, and were spared, with Bonny eventually being released.

The coin features an idealised, and fanciful depiction of Bonny, adorned with many of the pirate tropes we’ve come to love. It’s a very pretty design. Under her sits a compass rose, behind her a ship’s wheel, and framing the whole composition are the Kraken’s tentacles. As is common with MK coins, there’s the employment of UV enamel to part of the coin, specifically the tentacles. As a result, they glow when the light dims. The same is true on the obverse face. It’s all very striking, and quite unique in this genre.

This two-ounce silver coin comes boxed, with a certificate of authenticity. The square capsule-frame also includes a themed insert, and the whole thing looks quite excellent. Definitely a coin I’d like to see in hand, but with only 199 being struck, only the lucky few will have that pleasure. Pirate coins always seem to hit the mark, and this one does nothing to upset that opinion. Available to order now.
