Mint of MK’s new Great White Shark coin is an innovative look at a perennial favourite of the natural world
Easily one of the most innovative coin producers working today, Mint of MK consistently issue coins that are different, fun, and beautifully produced. We have a few queued up to look at, but this one caught our eye as an example of just how effective presentation can be in determining the desirability of a quirky coin.
Called ‘Apex of the Deep: Great White’, it is first and foremost a shaped, dimensional coin, issued for Liberia, that does a terrific job of bringing the iconic Great White Shark to numismatic life. Little touches like the scarring on the animals back (Great Whites, despite their reputation, live hard lives), the wrinkles, and the overall posing, all help bring this much loved and feared predator to life.
What lifts this one, however, is some quite extraordinary presentation. The silver shark is mounted on a wedge of tinted acrylic with a beautifully detailed top surface replicating the sea. The shark coin sits atop it. The base has a light within it, that when turned on, illuminates the acrylic, and highlights the UV colour in the mouth of the shark itself. It’s a fun touch that makes this something with much wider appeal than just coin collectors.
Best of all, this release should be quite affordable. The shark is formed in four grams of fine silver, and Mint of MK coins always seem competitively priced anyway. There are two variants. The rarer of the two is a gilded one, and of the 999 coins to be produced, 333 of them will have this finish. Far better, in my view, is the antiqued version. This suits the subject better, and there will be an appropriate 666 of these. Both have identical presentation, and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. Love this one! Available to pre-order now.
