United States Capitol shaped coin is the latest unusual design offering from the British Pobjoy Mint

We’re don’t often cover base metal coins unless they’re a little unusual or we feel they may have some appeal to our regular readers. With the British Pobjoy Mint having plenty of coverage anyway, combined with the release of a big and pricey precious metal coin featuring the same subject from another producer, it seemed obvious to have a look at this new United States Capitol coin.

Produced in nickel-silver, it’s the latest in Pobjoys unusually shaped series that in the past has included the Eiffel Tower and the Queen Elizabeth Tower from the Houses of Parliament. It’s a good representation of the dome on this iconic building. Issued for the British Virgin Islands (the birthplace of the Capitol’s architect, William Thornton), with a $1 denomination, just 5,000 will be produced and the coin will sell for £18.30 plus tax. Available now, it ships in a cool red, white & blue pouch, much like the Big Ben coin.

MINTS DESCRIPTION: Such an iconic building deserves an iconic coin so Pobjoy Mint has elected to strike a coin that replicates this imposing shape with great accuracy.  Willliam Thornton is the man we can thank for this marvel of engineering and as he was born in the British Virgin Island it makes the Capitol coin a very fitting tribute. Only a few shaped coins exist on the market and this $1 has a low mintage for a coin of this type increasing its rarity and desirability to collectors.  We have featured our new and exclusive effigy design of HM Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse which captures our Queen in all her glory.

The United States Capitol is also known as Capitol Building and Capitol Hill is the headquarters of the US Congress and the seat of the Legislative branch of the US Federal Government and is located on top of Capitol Hill in Washington D.C.

Pobjoy Mint is proud of the success we have had producing such an unusual shaped coin for the British Virgin Islands and hope that the time and love spent creating this coin is easily recognisable to our collectors.
