Thor’s legendary weapon of choice, Mjolnir, is reproduced in miniature for MDM’s latest dimensional silver coin

We could describe how the story of Mjolnir, the famed weapon of choice of the Norse Thunder God Thor, was first told in Skáldskaparmál from Snorri’s Edda. Of how it was forged as the result of a bet between Loki, Sindri, and Brokrr, Of its ability to hit whatever Thor throws it at and then return to his hands, but we suspect Mjolnir to most will be the hammer that smashed Thanos in the face in the Avengers movies, so we won’t…

The form of the hammer is well known, having starred in tons of blockbuster movies, so we’re pretty sure that collectors would cry foul on any errors in the basic design, so it’s just as well that MDM seem to have done a top job on it. This is a fully dimensional coin, shaped in all directions rather than just in outline, although the handle is carved from African Rosewood and engraved with Nordic runes.

The head of the hammer is fine silver, half a kilo of it, and also covered with Nordic runes. The ‘obverse’, containing the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, is cleverly integrated into the design, as is the name of the coin, should you not know it already. It’s antique-finished and displayed in a clear case with a faux-rock style base, complete with impact damage.

A highly unusual coin, this should have broad appeal with fans of Thor, and there are millions of them, It will be a pricey beast of course and we’ve seen prices around the €1,200/$1,500 USD mark, but the mintage is only 399 pieces, so we suspect it will sell well. Available to order now.
