Numistrade expands its gold & silver bullion range, adding the Sporting Ounce to the African, Nautical & Lunar ranges

Numistrade have had a relatively long presence in the modern bullion market, even if they’re quite low profile as a name. The most famous of their ranges is the African Ounce, issued for Rwanda, which debuted back in 2008, and is still running today, with the Martial Eagle being the 2025 issue. Joining that in 2017 were the Nautical Ounce, featuring famous sailing ships from history, and the Lunar Ounce, which uses a panelled look to depict the Chinese lunar calendar, both also under the Rwanda banner.

For the first time in almost a decade, a new Rwandan bullion range joins this trio, and the theme this time is sport. It’s quite an inspired choice, as there are plenty of sports to choose from, ensuring the range has as long a life as collectors want. The first coin features cycling, a gruelling sport, and depicts two competitors racing in front of the cheering crowds the sport is known for. At the top is a small cycling icon, and the border holds all the inscriptions. It’s a particularly appropriate choice, as the 2025 UCI Road World Championship will be held in the Rwandan capital Kigali. It’s the first time it’s ever been held in Africa since it started in 1921.

The style is much the same as that employed on those earlier ranges, and that’s fine, given they seem popular. The base bullion range is much the same, with silver and gold in one-ounce, and one-twelfth ounce weights. These all have an uncapped mintage until the minting period ends at the end of 2026. That’s almost always been the case in the earlier ranges, yet completed mintages remain quite attractive, in the tens, rather than hundreds of thousands. There’s also a 3-coin set, and a proof, rocking a huge 80 mm diameter at the same one-ounce weight, which you can read more about lower down. A neat debut for a series with a lot of potential, and somewhat original in the bullion space. Available to order now.

THE 80 MM RANGE

The most interesting coins also weigh an ounce each, but they’ve been struck using an 80 mm blank. For context, that results in a surface area approximately four times that of a 40 mm diameter coin. The most numerous variant, and the only one sold singly, is a proof finish coin. However, joining that is a 3-coin boxed set with more unique finishes. Here, there are coloured, gilded, and antique finished coins, which are only available in these 333 sets.
