A stunning stackable bust of Venus, and a set of cupcakes, comprise Coin’s Today’s latest silver oddities
South Korean producer, Coin’s Today, has been busy, and we’ve got another pair of new issues which display the usual mix of inventiveness, and quality design. One of the two is another of those unusual little sets that they produce from time to time, but the first one we’re looking at is the latest in Today’s often spectacular stackable silver range.
This one is the first in a new ‘Goddesses’ series, a perennially popular theme in numismatic circles, and it features a stunning bust of Venus, the Roman goddess of love, fertility, and victory. She was one of the most important deities in the Roman pantheon, with even Julius Caesar claiming to be a descendant of her. She’s also an iconic subject in the art world, with many of the greatest artists in history depicting her in paintings, and in sculpture.
The bust here is gorgeous, showing her as a young woman. Around her neck is a necklace, dangling from which is a seashell. The link is an old one, with the famous ‘The Birth of Venus’ by Sandro Botticelli, depicting her standing in one. The finished article is sublime. The piece remains fully stackable, with the negative imprint on the obverse. The only inscription is a composition, engraved on the lower edge. The two-ounce silver piece comes in a custom capsule, and there will be a stand available that can be purchased separately, should you wish to display one.
The second release is considerably more unusual, and is a sequel of sorts to a set released in August last year. That one featured three, half-ounce silver ice-cream cones, each a different colour, and all packaged in a clever gatefold box shaped like an ice-cream van. This new issue is of the same ilk, but it’s cupcakes on the menu this time.
It’s a set of three half-ounce pieces again, each coloured differently, and each shaped like a cupcake. It really isn’t any more complicated than that. These aren’t denominated coins, so there are no inscriptions on either face. They’re quite neat, and look the part, but it’s the packaging that rounds it all out.
As cupcake vans don’t seem to be a thing, the box is shaped like a cupcake shop, with the three pieces of silver displayed in its windows. When you open up the box, those same cakes are sitting on tables. A quirky set, it won’t be for everyone, of course, but you have to admire the inventiveness on display here.
