One of the highlights of the numismatic calendar, the Royal Mint’s proof Britannia range has brought forth some beautiful designs over the last decade, none more so than the stunning 2014 coin by Jody Clark. For 2021, the mint has split the range in two, with a ‘Core’ range, and a ‘Premium Exclusive’ range, each with a completely different look.
Starting with the core design, it’s an attractive piece of work by designer P.J. Lynch, showing an enthroned Britannia with a lion at her feet. Dressed in a long flowing gown and carrying a trident and shield, the art incorporates all the elements you would expect, but the front angled view is one we don’t see very often. We’re not particular fans of the ‘sunburst’ radial pattern in the background, but in truth, it does little to distract from the overall look. A super piece.
There’s a seven coin range available to buy individually, which you can see in the specification tables lower down, but the mix of multi-coin sets the mint produces have some others in them, like the six-coin sets in which the biggest coin is an ounce, going down to a tiny 8 mm 1/40 oz variant. Also to arrive shortly will be a ¼ oz platinum coin with a 150 mintage.
