The New Zealand Mint’s expansive Star Wars range swells with the addition of another varied selection of silver coins

We’ve been a bit quieter on the New Zealand Mint’s many franchised media coins of late, choosing to take a break from trying to cover everything in favour of mixing up our article choice a little, but we’re back with a little round-up of the last months issues in the giant Star Wars Universe. As always, the selection doesn’t get more varied, and as well as a couple of the bigger, three-ounce character coins joining the line-up, there are some more unusual offerings.

First of them is a shaped starship coin, available in two sizes, and soon to be joined by another design in a day or two, It wouldn’t be the New Zealand Mint without Chibi putting in an appearance, but just a single design. There will be another, Lando Calrissian, coming later next month. The star for us is without question, another of those amazing cast miniatures the mint does so well. It’s a very cool Yoda this time.

All the coins are available to order now. If you’d like to help out AgAuNEWS at no cost to yourself, click the banner below and buy from the mint, and we’ll get a little something to help keep me in cream buns. Thanks all.

THE MANDALORIAN N-1 STARFIGHTER

A new ship-shaped coin marks out a foray into the hit show The Mandalorian, with Din Djarin’s new N-1 Starfighter, a vessel made famous in greater numbers in the prequel trilogy of Star Wars movies. These aren’t fully dimensional coins, but a simpler high-relief on a shaped outline, but that’s no bad thing, especially in cost terms. The video below shows plenty of the relief, and lots of detail.

The thicker looking of the two formats is actually the smaller one, tipping the scales at an ounce. The other coin is much larger at three ounces, reaching out to well over double the length. Both seem to be attractive examples of a well-liked type of coin, seemingly more so outside strictly numismatic circles. The antique finish looks superb, and the presentation is as excellent as you’d expect from a producer with a reputation for it. A Millennium Falcon coin in a similar vein will launch in a couple of days time, so expect more to come, perhaps Boba Fett’s Slave One, for example.

DARTH VADER 3 Oz

Another in the three-ounce flagship series of character coins, this one released a few weeks ago, Darth Vader is back with a second coin already. This range features a colour image of the character in question, a terrific one this time, we think, along with some cleanly struck images from their lore. There’s a kind of logo/inscription mix in the foreground that we find a little intrusive, to be honest, but that colour image is more than cool enough to make up for it.

This follows a Luke Skywalker coin, and that first Vader issue, of course, and it looks to be a good range. This one has a slightly different style, so likely not strictly part of the series, but close enough to consider them complimentary.

PRINCESS LEIA 3oz

The latest in that same series of big character coins is Princess Leia, played by the eternally gorgeous, and super talented Carrie Fisher, who sadly passed away in 2016 at far too young an age. It’s another multi-windowed design, depicting scenes from the character’s arc, headlined by that now super-iconic image of her with the famous hair-style.

A mix of colour and cleanly struck images, surrounded by a neat themed border, make this an essential addition to the series. The presentation is excellent again.

STAR WARS CHIBI: ANAKIN SKYWALKER

Anyone who has come to this site before will have seen Chibi coins talked about. A huge hit for the NZ Mint, they come in many different franchises, with one of the oldest, and most numerous, the various Star Wars productions. The latest release, launched just today, is from the prequel trilogy of movies, and features Anakin Skywalker, before he became the iconic Darth Vader.

As has been the case with most of the 2023 releases, there is a one-in-ten chance that the coin you buy will be a fully gilded variant. You won’t know which one you get beforehand, and they are not available separately. Check out our full profile of the Chibi range over in our Active Coin Profile page. If you want something non Star Wars, they also released a Captain Marvel Chibi as well.

JEDI MASTER YODA SILVER MINIATURE

We’ve always been blown away by the quality of the mints numerous cast silver miniatures. Sculptor Alejandro Pereira Ezcurra has done awesome work across the DC, Star Trek, and Disney franchises for the NZ Mint in recent years, as well as Star Wars, with a range of such miniatures. This one is every bit as outstanding as the rest of them – indeed, one of my personal favourites to date.

Jedi Master Yoda has always a fan favourite been, and as you can see from the images above, Ezcurra has nailed it, with the sculpt dripping with the appropriate power and wisdom that is exemplified by the character in the movies. It’s a little shy of five ounces in weight, and stands around 56 mm in height. Great presentation, as always, we love this one, and I say that as a lukewarm Star Wars fan at best. I really must get that profile of these miniatures started.
