The Great Greek Mythology silver coin series continues with a ninth batch of three – Hera, Odysseus, and the winged horse Pegasus

Coins 25, 26, and 27 in Mint XXI’s epic 36-coin ‘The Great Greek Mythology’ series of mix-sized silver coins are now out, and there’s one of each size -1oz, 2oz, and 3oz. Overall, there will be 12 one-ounce coins, 16 two-ounce coins, and 8 three-ounce coins in the set, and to help keep track of them, and allow you to see them all in the same place, we produced one of our Coin Series Profiles for you.

We’ve looked at this series many times, so rather than go over it again, we’ll let the images, and the videos that Mint XXI produces, (always a good sign that a producer has confidence in their offerings) do most of the heavy lifting. This time we have a fine Hera, Odysseus (our favourite of this trio), and Pegasus, which continues with the practice of putting creatures in the one-ounce weight. All the coins are boxed with a C.O.A. and available to order now.

HERA (3 oz)

Hera is the goddess of women, marriage and family, and the queen of the most important gods, the Twelve Olympians. She was the wife, and sister, of Zeus, and the daughter of the Titans Cronus and Rhea. She was said to be the epitome of the vengeful woman, dealing with many of Zeus’s dalliances in a harsh way. The Peacock is a sacred animal associated with her, and she is often depicted holding a pomegranate. Both are depicted on the coin.

ODYSSEUS (2 oz)

The Odyssey is a Greek epic poem composed of 24 passages, written by the Greek poet Homer in the 8th century B.C. It tells the story of the return home from the Trojan War of the Greek hero Odysseus. In addition to having been away fighting for ten years, Odysseus takes another ten years to return to the island of Ithaca, of which he was king, during which time his son Telemachus and his wife Penelope must tolerate in their palace the suitors who seek to betroth her (for they already believed Odysseus to be dead), while consuming the family’s possessions. Odysseus’ best weapon is his cunning, thanks to which, in addition to the help of the goddess Athena, daughter of Zeus, he is able to escape the constant problems he has to face from various gods.

PEGASUS (1 oz)

Created by Poseidon, Pegasus is a winged horse, born from the blood of Medusa after Perseus trimmed her height by a few inches. He was captured by the Greek hero Bellerophon, who rode him to defeat the Chimera. Pegasus and Bellerephon both perished at the hand of Zeus, for trying to reach Mount Olympus.
