The cast weapon genre welcomes Mint of MK to its ranks with a silver rocket propelled grenade coin issued for Cameroon
A genre that seems to growing in popularity in recent years, the ‘mini-weapon’ silver miniature is usually a little out of our wheelhouse, given they’re generally cast, not struck, and usually not denominated. However, Coin’s Today have a splendid range of bladed weapon miniatures out, and we’ve seen other designs that hint this isn’t a subject going away anytime soon, so here we are with Mint of MK’s new offering, which also happens to be a fully denominated coin.
Rather than go the assault rifle, pistol, or sword route, MK have gone all-in with one of the most recognisable hand weapons carried by soldiers and militants around the world for decades – the rocket propelled grenade, more commonly known as the RPG. Having their roots in the Second World War with weapons like the German Panzerfaust, the British PIAT, and the American Bazooka, these weapons fired an anti-tank warhead and were very effective if on target, spalling metal shards inside the tank that would cut the crew to pieces.
They continued to be developed by all the major powers through the Cold War, and a 1961 Soviet design, the RPG-7, became the most widespread of them all, manufactured to this day, and seen in the hands of militants all over the world, as well as at least 40 national armed forces. It’s crude, but effective, and reusable, as well as being cheap and simple to manufacture. They can penetrate the equivalent of 900 mm of rolled homogenous armour, with a range up to 200 mm, although they’re difficult to get on target.
MK’s new coin is a miniature replica of an early RPG-7, with what looks like an 85 mm, 2.25kg, PG-7 HEAT (High-Explosive Anti-Tank) warhead. Later versions were equipped with extras such as optical sights, and there are well over a dozen different warheads, but what you see here is the purest form of the early RPG-7. It looks to be a superb reproduction, and the black finish is suitably ‘tactical’.
We’re constantly surprised by how big these are, despite the relatively light weight, and this coin is an impressive 160 mm long, so certainly won’t look lost on a shelf. Display should be a doddle with the solid-acrylic display block, which we genuinely love here, and there’s an equally elongated certificate in the box. It’s a fine addition to the genre, and the first in a new series. Available to order now.
