The Archangel Michael’s battle with the fallen angel, Lucifer, springs to life on T&S Coins latest silver coin
One of the most powerful beings in the Abrahamic religions, the Archangel Michael was the highest of the angels, and the guardian prince of Israel. Like all figures in religion, there are many stories of his exploits, some contradictory, but the most famous of them today is his epic battle with, and defeat of, Lucifer, the Fallen Angel, and the embodiment of evil.
The battle is a popular theme in numismatics, from adorning the Ukrainian bullion coin, to several impressive collectible coins. Joining them is one of the most impressive Archangel Michael designs, and it’s particularly apt that it comes from the pen of a Ukrainian artist, and one of the founders of the issuing producer, T & S Coin, Yuriy Tikhonovskiy.
The design is beautiful, employing that signature T&S style of gilding, and light colouring over an antique finish. High relief is utilised to lift the two characters from the chaotic background. Michael’s depiction is gloriously epic, with gilded wings outstretched, following the curve of the coin’s rim perfectly. He carries a gilded spear, red blood dripping from the tip where it’s pierced the chest of the cloven-hooved Lucifer. The red cloak is a superb contrast, a trick they’ve utilised on other issues, like Sparta, and Troy.
Like all of T&S’s issues, it uses the particularly attractive common obverse that adorns all of their coins, this time with the Public Shield of Niue at its centre, and the title ‘MICHAEL’ inscribed at the top. Packaging is neat, with an enclosed Certificate of Authenticity, and this two-ounce coin has their standard mintage of 500 pieces. A super release, it’s one of the best angel coins we’ve seen so far.
