Spectres releases a striking two-ounce, three-dimensional, silver baseball coin

Today, the coin producer, Spectres, joins a small group who’ve released spherical coins. German producer, MDM, has issued several in the past, including planetary ones, and some sports coins, primarily football (the proper one) and cricket, and even hefty, solid, one-kilo offerings. Spectres coin is hollow, which keeps it relatively affordable, and it tips the scales at two ounces. At 40 mm in diameter, a solid version would exceed 11 ounces.

If you’re interested in baseball, this will be right in your wheelhouse, we’d imagine. It’s a replica baseball, inscribed with a pretend team – ‘The Bullion Bombers’ – in one panel, and issue details for Samoa, in a couple of others. The serial number, of 1,000 being produced, is also inscribed on the surface as ‘Home Runs’. If it was just a sphere with some inscriptions on it, we’d not be particularly impressed by it, but the way the ‘stitching’ ridges have been implemented, raises this one to a higher level.

The finished article is an exceptional realisation, in miniature of course, of the ball from one of the world’s most popular sports. Unlike Agoro’s recent heavy foray into the sport, Spectres coin isn’t one licensed from MLB, but a more generic homage to the sport, and there’s nothing wrong with that. The coin comes boxed with a Certificate of Authenticity, but we can see this just sitting on a stand on a desk, much like many fans do with their signed baseballs. In summary, not the most original of ideas, but it looks so brilliantly brought to reality, we don’t think that matters a jot. Available to order now.
