2018 STAR TREK NEXT GEN FOIL SERIES

In what has been a very rapid release schedule, the New Zealand Mint has issued the fifth and sixth foils in its Star Trek Next Generation series of seven. The first release, Encounter at Farpoint, only debuted in early August, so a two month schedule (we’re not expecting a long wait for the final piece) for a seven foil set is rapid going, even for this mint.

Fortunately, these aren’t hugely expensive at $39.000 USD each and their use of the work of Star Trek fan favourite artist Juan Ortiz is a pleasant change from the seemingly never-ending reproduction of marketing material that so often adorns licenced coin issues. The two new foils are also 148 x 98 mm in size and formed from five grams of fine silver. They look great in the hardback binder that came free with the first foil. Two more classic episodes, of course. The Picard-centric Chain of Command is an outstanding example of this series at its best, while Unification brought back Leonard Nimoy’s Spock in a Romulan-heavy espionage episode that was watched by 25 million on its first showing. Both are available to order today.
