Scottsdale debuts their third Equatorial Guinea Giraffe bullion coin, and there’s Jesus and a Unicorn as well

One of the most innovative, and expansive bullion producers in the world today, Scottsdale Mint has a huge range of offerings, encompassing an equally huge range of themes. They continue to cram in as many releases as possible before year’s end, to catch up, and we understand that even the Eastern Caribbean 8 will still be getting a 2023 programme, and the Ghana Alien also.

The latest issue is the third in their Giraffe series, but last month also saw a new release in their now ten-coin Jesus Collection, and the debut of the Ghana Unicorn range. When we say the mint has a wide selection of themes, you’ll get some indication of that with these three. If you remain unconvinced, check out our huge guide to the mints many releases. Even that doesn’t include EC8, the Congo Silverback Gorilla, or the terrific Chiselled Edge Ancients ranges. We’ll try to catch up with the many bullion coins we’ve yet to cover from other mints, over the next week or so, as we’ve been a bit focused on the more numismatic end of the market of late.

2023 EQUATORIAL GUINEA GIRAFFE

The third in one of the mints more attractive ranges, the Equatorial Guinea Giraffe joins the Leopard, Cheetah, Gorilla, and other animals, in having their own bullion series with an annually changing design. A difficult animal to fit onto a coin, Scottsdale have managed it with relative ease, it seems, as it’s another super design.

Depicting an adult with a calf, it’s surrounded by a border pattern that differs slightly from the 2022 issue, but with clear familial ties to earlier coins. The one-ounce silver coin is the bullion offering, as the similarly sized gold version is sporting a proof finish, and comes boxed with a COA. A really nice release, in our view.

2023 GHANA UNICORN

AURORA

JUBILEE

BLOSSOM

A little out of the ordinary for Scottsdale Mint, the Ghana Unicorn depicts one of mythology’s greatest creatures, but the way they’ve done so is to seemingly take a few steps down the ‘My Little Pony’ route. The basic design is the horny horse in profile, with an exceptionally long mane, and it’s surrounded by a border filled with astrological-style symbols. In the background is a fantasy castle.

The only format in the range is the one-ounce 0.999 silver, and a clean, proof-like finish makes up the bulk of the mintage. The more unusual offerings are a trio of brightly coloured coins, called Aurora, Blossom, and Jubilee, They’re a bit of an acquired taste, to be honest, but they must be finding fans, as at least one of them is sold out at the mint. The base coin is supplied encapsulated, but the others come in the mint’s secure ‘Certi-Lock’ packaging.

2023 THE TEACHER

The third annual issue in the mints ‘Jesus Collection’, this time the focus is on the Sermon on the Mount, with Jesus as a teacher. Scottsdale has a history of religious coins, mainly through their epic 60-coin, 10-year ‘Biblical Series’ of Gustave Dore inspired issues, and the size of this range is an indicator of the importance of the subject to the producer. The mints’ owner, Josh Phair, has set aside some of the proceeds of the range to selected ministries.

The range has now grown to encompass ten formats, three of which are gold, with one of them coloured. The other seven are silver, again one of them coloured. In addition, there are antique-finished, and rhodium-plated variants, which, along with the base prooflike coin, are also available in the half-ounce weight. A nice design, it has shades of Eastern European Icon art. All are sold encapsulated, except the coloured silver, which comes in the mints Certi-Lock packaging, and the coloured gold, which is boxed with a Certificate of Authenticity.
