One of the years most eagerly awaited releases is now upon us. Last years proof Britannia design came out of nowhere to become, in our view at least, the coin of the year. By far. Following up this widely loved numismatic must have been one of the most unenviable jobs at the mint, but it was a job that needed to be done, and done it is.
Designed by Anthony Dufort, it’s a fine design and although based on the earlier £2 coin, it’s been enhanced greatly with a new background and what looks like a bit more detail. We’ll have more soon as the Royal Mint have jumped the gun somewhat and we’ve not yet had the hi-res press images.
Available to purchase now from the image link at the bottom, there are a selection of sizes in gold and silver from a too-small fortieth of an ounce, right up to the stunning 5oz coins.
MINTS DESCRIPTION
Each year, collectors await the release of our latest Britannia design to celebrate this iconic numismatic figure, as only The Royal Mint has the trademark to produce genuine Britannia coins. For 2015, artist and sculptor Antony Dufort has applied his talents to create a stunning maritime-themed Britannia, with trident in hand and a masted ship on the horizon, each fine detail of the design perfected in our unrivalled Proof finish.
Britannia has enjoyed a relationship with the coins of the United Kingdom for almost 2,000 years. The feminine personification of Britain, she is renowned for her beauty and over time, Britannia coins have become a showcase for British artists, with many eager to share their interpretation of the enduring icon. No collection is complete without its Britannia, for she has been in demand for centuries, and in a year where the numismatic great regains her place on the circulating coinage of the United Kingdom, the spotlight shines on the familiar and much-loved figure.
Antony Dufort has turned to traditional nautical elements for his elegant interpretation, but gives a modern feel to his design, proving once more that Britannia’s history can combine with contemporary design, to stunning effect. The Britannia Collection offers an excellent choice, with a wide range of sets and individual coins to choose from – all struck in fine gold and fine silver and all finished to pristine Proof standard.
ADVERTISEMENTS
Do you have the exact mintage figure, especially for the proof silver Britannias?
Mintage figures are out.
2015 Proof Britannia 1oz silver: 3,000 in limited presentation, total mintage 6,550
2015 Proof Britannia 5oz silver: 650 in limited presentation, total mintage 1,150
Thanks Daniel. We were hoping to tidy this up when we publish the high resolution images, but we’re very late getting them for some reason.
Hi Daniel
What is your source for that numbers of the 2015s?
As far as I can tell from the RM’s website there are 3 000 lmtd 1oz editions + 1 750 Proof sets, making the total of 1oz Proofs 4 750…
Thanks
Received mine (1oz Silver) today… Quite disappointed with the strike! The background has literally no detail, you can’ t tell the land from the see etc. Nothing like the pictures (mind you they are from the 5oz one, but still!)
That’s disappointing. We have a 5oz coming but the 1oz should certainly be the highest priority for the mint as it’s the one most people will see. Usually the RM are great, but we’re still waiting for the range of hi-res images of these coins that we get for all the others. We’ll post them up as soon as possible to see if the difference is noticeable on the bigger images.
Thanks Mik, not sure if this worked, but if it did, you can take a look at a photo here:

Thanks George. That does look a little weak, but it’s hard to tell if that is because of the design or the strike. I suspect that the design is the culprit as last years was full of intricate lines while this has lots of open areas. I do really like it though, but following last years coin, the 2015 was always going to be a tough sell. That 2014 design will go down as one of the coins of the decade in my view.
