SERIES I PROOF SILVER SETS

As well as the single bullion coins, the South African Mint also debuted these very attractive twin-coin sets struck to a proof standard. Beautifully presented in a custom box with different lid art for each issue, they remain one of the best ways to get these designs. Just 1,000 of each design is being offered in this form.

We do have an issue with them, however, and that’s related to the choice of coins in the set. The problem is, you’re effectively buying two of the same proof finish coins, just to get that repeating effect on the obverse displayed in all its glory. We’d have been far happier if there was a difference in the two reverse side finishes, simply to justify the high cost, perhaps one struck to a reverse-proof finish, or perhaps, antiqued. As long as the two obverses remain the same, it would have enhanced appeal immeasurably.

SERIES I KRUGERRAND GOLD SETS

Easily the most expensive of the official sets, the double gold Krugerrand sets are extremely collectable for the Krugerrand fan, as well as lovers of the Big Five series. Each set includes one of the gold Big Five coins, and it’s accompanied by a proof Krugerrand with a privy mark that matches the animal in question.

The Krugerrand is a legend in the bullion coin world, over half a century old, and available in a huge range of sizes. You’ll notice the coins are redder than the yellow gold Big Five coin. Kruger’s are struck in 22 kt (0.9167) fineness, which are bulked up with copper, although they do still contain a full troy ounce of gold (total coin weight is around 34 grams as opposed to 31.1). That there are only 100 of these sets being produced for each of the five issues, is hugely attractive. With fine presentation, a beautiful item.

SERIES II TWO-COIN SETS

Two new sets join the range for Series II. The first is a silver one, with a proof variant and a proof silver Krugerrand with an elephant privy on it. Very nice, and considerably more affordable than the long-running gold set.

Secondly, it’s the turn of a gold set to join an earlier silver one. This time, the double capsule pair of elephants is offered in 1/4oz form, with two of them showing off the repeating obverse design. The 1oz silver set has been a fixture in the range since the beginning, so this is a good choice. Both sets have a mintage of 1,000.
