Perth Mint expands its tv/movie ranges with new Trek, Looney Tunes and Planet of the Apes coins

Along with the New Zealand Mint and the Royal Canadian Mint, the Western Australian based Perth Mint are one of the three major issuers of coins featuring popular culture television and movie series. With Star Trek enjoying the status of most-favoured licence, we’re not surprised that a new issue is coming early in the year, but adding a movie anniversary and a cool cartoon to the mix certainly was.

Star Trek Discovery is the latest in the fifty-year old franchise’s history and a very controversial one. Taking Trek down a darker, more modern path than before, it’s at odds with fans of the Next Generation family of series in particular, but for this writer at least, an outstanding series that is the best that Trek has been for decades. The two 1oz coins are designed to match the previous five sets of Captains & Vessels that came out a couple of years ago and depict Michael Burnham and the USS Discovery. They’re only available in this set and unfortunately the large plastic transporter is wheeled out again. As you may have guessed, we’re not fans of that and would much prefer something smaller and different.

Looney Tunes has been covered in coins before – by the RCM and not that long ago, but Perth are kicking off a new five-coin series with a decent Bugs Bunny issue. At half an ounce in weight, they’re more affordable than the others and lose little in impact. NZ Mint style acrylic frames are great and are hugely welcome here and the design is fresh, if unambitious. Four more coins are coming – Daffy Duck (April), Tweety Bird (June), Sylvestor the Cat (August) and Tasmanian Devil (October).

Planet of the Apes is 40 years old and this cult movie certainly deserves a numismatic celebration. This new issue depicts a coloured image of the ape Galen, along with a clean-struck rendition of Ape City. A one-ounce silver coin, it comes presented in the acrylic frame and a themed shipper. Like the other issues here, the mintage is set at 5,000.

2018 STAR TREK DISCOVERY TWO-COIN SET

The sixth live-action series set in the Star Trek universe, Star Trek: Discovery was released on 24 September 2017 as a single serialised storyline rather than previous series’ weekly destination-based adventure format. The series continues to reflect Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry’s optimistic vision of the future, together with his allegories of the human condition and high-concept science fiction. Set in the 23rd century, about 90 years after Star Trek: Enterprise and 10 years before Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: Discovery deals with hostilities between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire. Star Trek: Discovery is notable for minority characters, taking a colour and gender-blind approach. Its diverse crew includes First Officer Michael Burnham, a female Commander with a traditionally male name and the first African-American woman playing a lead character in a Star Trek series.

DESIGN: The First Officer Michael Burnham coin’s reverse portrays a colour image of Sonequa Martin-Green as First Officer Michael Burnham, as she appeared in Star Trek: Discovery, against a representation of the Delta Shield insignia and the inscription FIRST OFFICER MICHAEL BURNHAM. The design also includes The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark, and the coin’s weight and fineness.

The U.S.S. Discovery NCC-1031 coin’s reverse depicts a colour image of the U.S.S. Discovery NCC-1031 against an intergalactic background surrounded by the white olive branches of the United Federation of Planets logo. The design also includes The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark, and the coin’s weight and fineness. Each coin’s obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the monetary denomination, and the 2018 year-date.

PACKAGING: The two-coin set is packaged in a case designed to look like a Star Trek Transporter and is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.

2018 LOONEY TUNES BUGS BUNNY SILVER COIN

One of the iconic characters of the golden age of American animation, BUGS BUNNY shot to fame after starring in Looney Tunes and later Merrie Melodies short films. Entertainment and the wise-cracking grey and white trickster even has his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

DESIGN: The reverse of the coin features BUGS BUNNY reclining with a carrot and the Looney Tunes vector logo in the background. The design also includes the BUGS BUNNY inscription and The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark. The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2018 year-date and the monetary denomination are depicted on the coin’s obverse.

2018 PLANET OF THE APES 40TH SILVER COIN

Released in 1968, Planet of the Apes is a ground-breaking movie which, in the tradition of great science fiction, reflects conflicts and questions in our own society. The film tells the story of an astronaut crew which crash-lands on a dystopian planet in the year 3978, about two millennia after their departure on a near light-speed voyage. In a desolate landscape, the surviving crew members, led by Taylor (played by the late Hollywood star Charlton Heston), discover a society in which apes are the dominant species with human-like intelligence and speech. Organised in a strict caste system, the apes treat humans like vermin who are hunted to be killed,  enslaved or used for experiments. A critical and commercial success, the film won an Oscar for outstanding makeup.

DESIGN: The coloured coin’s reverse features the face of an ape that appears on the original movie poster with a depiction of the adobe-like structures of the arid Ape City in the foreground. The design also includes The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark. The coin’s obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her
Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the monetary denomination and the 2018 year-date. Designed by Ing Ing Jong.

PACKAGING: Each coin is presented in a clear acrylic case, allowing both sides of the coin to be displayed, and is packaged within a themed shipper. The coin is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
