Disney’s classic Alice in Wonderland movie features on Niue’s latest four-coin set

The New Zealand Mint have released another of their rare four-coin sets as part of the ever-growing Disney catalogue. Following a Jungle Book set in 2017, it’s the turn of the classic Alice in Wonderland to get the numismatic treatment. Easily one of the best of the Disney classics, Alice in Wonderland is packed full of great characters, just as the book it was based on was.

Each of the four coins depicts a coloured image of one of the major characters and while they push no boundaries as far as specification goes, the designs are bang on point and attractive. Fans of the movie will find much to like here. Each coin is a one-ounce silver round, issued for Niue and with the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.

Packaging is excellent, as you would expect from this mint. A larger version of the book-style box we like so much holds the four coins for easy display and the gold-coloured foil decoration will blend into a bookcase collection nicely – if that’s your thing. Available to order now, the set has a recommended price of $280.00 and will ship later in the first half of July.

Alice in Wonderland is a 1951 American animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Productions and based on the Alice books by Lewis Carroll. The 13th of Disney’s animated features, the film premiered in New York City and London on July 26, 1951. The film features the voices of Kathryn Beaumont as Alice, Sterling Holloway as the Cheshire Cat, Verna Felton as the Queen of Hearts, and Ed Wynn as the Mad Hatter.

Walt Disney first attempted unsuccessfully to adapt Alice into an animated feature film during the 1930s. However, he finally revived the idea in the 1940s. The film was originally intended to be a live-action/animated film, however, Disney decided to make it an all-animated feature in 1946. The theme song of the same name has since become a jazz standard.

While the film was critically panned on its initial release, the movie proved to be ahead of its time and has since been regarded as one of Disney’s greatest animated classics, notably one of the biggest cult classics in the animation medium, as well as one of the best film adaptations of Alice.
