The sixth coin in the New Zealand Mints Feng Shui series of silver coins is now upon us and like the last coin it depicts a mythological creature instead of a natural one. The first in the series came out back in 2012 with a beautiful Koi coin, and was followed a year later by the equally well done Cranes. Coins depicting horses, elephants and the Phoenix followed on in subsequent years, the last one only a few months ago back in May.

All of the coins are struck in an identical format; 1 oz of proof finish fine silver with selective colouring to the reverse side. To date, the colouring has been quite sympathetically done, the first two coins in particular quite skillfully, but for this latest Dragon design the mint has made a new addition to the format. Sitting embedded in the right-hand side of the reverse face is a red crystal, much like the Swarovski Elements that adorn many other coins from different mints. Whether this is a good thing or not is in the eye of the beholder as they say, and while we’re not huge fans of embedded crystalshere, this one is integrated into the artwork well enough not to compromise it.

The really nice packaging synonymous with this series remains, if a trifle gaudy in colour this time out, and the whole does nothing to compromise the reputation this series has. Selling for the usual $85.00 USD, it should be available from the 12th October and mintage is limited to 5,000. We’d expect to see a ¼ oz gold version late in 2016 much like the elphant that we covered earlier this week.

MINTS DESCRIPTION

Dragons are considered powerful protectors in Feng Shui culture creating peace and bringing good fortune into the home and workplace.

The strong yang, or male energy, makes the Dragon an auspicious symbol of great honour. As an icon of strength and protection, it keeps one from harm and is a powerful gift to a loved one. When paired with a Phoenix, which represents yin or female energy, an ultimate balance is formed.

REVERSE: This features a golden Dragon with a red stone, powerfully symbolizing wealth and an abundance of opportunities. Around this, Cherry Blossoms are engraved against a proof quality polished background.

OBVERSE: This features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

PACKAGING: The Feng Shui Dragon 1 oz Silver Coin comes presented in a beautiful gloss lacquered case and themed outer coin packaging. The packaging makes this an ideal gift for any Feng Shui coin collector. The Certificate of Authenticity sits within the coin case.
