Mictlāntēcutli, the Aztec god of the dead, is brought to life as stackable silver using the mind of artist, Jorge Garza
The Lord of Mictlan, Mictlāntēcutli, is the god of the dead in Aztec mythology, and one of the principal gods of the Aztecs. He was said to be 1.8 m tall (6′), and depicted as a skeleton, splattered with blood, and sometimes wearing a skull mask. Seems a pleasant enough sort of chap, except for a penchant for having his worshippers practice ritual cannibalism. Then again, in a culture that glorified human sacrifice, that doesn’t seem particularly out of place.
Mictlāntēcutli is obviously a fine subject for the stackable silver bullion range put out by South Korean producer, Coin’s Today, and this new release affirms that in style. The design was done in collaboration with a talented artist, Jorge Garza, known for his innovative style, reimagining pop-culture icons in the old Aztec form of art. You can have a look at many of them on his Instagram page, like the brilliant Godzilla, Chucky, and Lobo pictures.
This new release certainly digs deep into that Aztec mythos, but there’s nothing two-dimensional about it. The look is quite extraordinary, certainly one of the most visually striking designs in a range of stackables filled with them. The high-relief detail is packed in everywhere, and there are skulls, snakes, spiders, and Aztec iconography placed all over it. Very impressive.
As always, it’s a stackable piece, so the back side has a reverse imprint, allowing that to be a thing. Each piece comes encapsulated, and in keeping with CT’s recent practice, they’ve moved from an unlimited mintage to one capped at just 1,500 pieces. I really like this one a lot, being extremely original, and very well realised. A cool piece in a very cool range. Available to order now.
