MDM wraps up its Myths and Legends five-coin silver series with the Sea Monster

A five coin series from German dealer and coin producer MDM, Myths and Legends is a quick run through some of the most recognisable inhabitants of the mythical world. The first two coins were released last November (Griffin, Mermaid) and the second pair launched in February (Wizard, Phoenix), so this new Sea Monster coin represents the last of this quickly issued series.

In a break from the norm in this popular genre, theses coins are struck with a reverse-proof finish instead of the near ubiquitous antiquing that predominates, joining Choice Mints superb Camelot series in that regard and breaking from MDM’s previous nine-coin Norse Gods range. They are two ounces of fine silver in weight however, so still quite traditional in that sense. Struck by BH Mayer in what MDM call “double high-relief minting“, these are 6mm thick coins, concave on both sides, allowing a deep strike with high levels of relief. The downside is the diameter is limited to 40mm instead of the more usual 50mm for a 2oz silver coin.

Each coin is issued for the Solomon Islands so has the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, in this case the hugely popular Ian Rank Broadley one. Packaging is custom for the series and while looking of a good quality, they’re not the prettiest of designs in our view. A colourful Certificate of Authenticity is enclosed. A box that will hold the entire set of five is also available. Site sponsors Coins Boutique and Powercoin both stock this range and the coins can be obtained there. Price is around €130 / $140. An interesting set with popular appeal. Those preferring an antique finish would do well to look at MDM’s excellent ongoing Roman Gladiators range.
