MDM nears the end of its UHR Legends & Myths series with the Wizard and the Phoenix

Unusual in eschewing the antique finish so prevalent in the ancient mythology genre of modern coins, MDM’s new five-coin Legends and Myths series is rapidly working its way to its conclusion. Coins three and four of the set are now available to order despite the debut only coming last November. Struck by the masters at BH Mayer, this series joins MDM’s large presence in this market with its nine-coin Norse Gods series and its 5oz special, along with the impressive layered 1kg Twelve Gods of Olympus and Cthonic Gods kilo, and a ten-coin minigold Gods of Olympus set.

The first pair of coins released in this new set depicted the Griffin and the Mermaid. Struck in a reverse-proof finish and employing what MDM claim is “double high-relief minting“, these are 6mm thick coins with all the extra weight allowing the deep strike rather than going toward increasing the coin diameter. The coins certainly don’t lack for relief being dished like the Perth Mint high-relief coins are, which makes possible a higher level of relief towards the coin centre.

Featuring a Wizard and a Phoenix, the  new pair exhibit all the fine characteristics of the debut coins, and if you liked those designs, you’ll probably like these as well. Each coin is issued for the Solomon Islands so has the effigy of Queen Elizabeth Ii on the obverse. Packaging has clearly had thought put into it, although not the prettiest of designs in our view, and a colourful Certificate of Authenticity is enclosed. Site sponsors Coins Boutique and Powercoin both stock this range and the coins can be obtained there. Price is around €130 / $140 and they should ship in March. You can see more images of the first two coins and the packaging options in our earlier article HERE.
