Two fine producers, the Lithuanian Mint, and Le Grand Mint, team up for a high-relief depiction of the four seasons
Spring, summer, autumn and winter – the four seasons that make up the cycle of our planet – have long been a popular trope in the artistic world, and numismatics are no different. The latest offering to depict the cycle of the seasons, is this fine design emanating from a collaboration between the technical excellence of The Lithuanian Mint, and the design flair of Le Grand Mint.
This is effectively a double-sided coin, with no distinct obverse and reverse faces. The reverse face, with an inset blue crystal at its centre is split into two scenes, each with a female personification of a season, in this case, autumn, and winter. The scenes are not fully separated, as many elements continue between the two areas, enhancing the idea that the seasons flow into each other, rather than abruptly change.
The obverse, which carries issue inscriptions on the border, is packed with vibrant nature, depicting, as it does, spring and summer, and complete with a warm red crystal at its heart. There’s more life and motion in the two personifications on this face, a way to signify the explosion of life that comes with the arrival of spring. Again, the two seasons are separate, but inextricably linked, just as in reality. It’s a terrific way to represent the seasonal cycle of life, and a beautiful design overall.
The coin, two ounces in weight, is boxed, and with a certificate of authenticity. The mintage is capped at 555 pieces, and it should be available to order now. A fine release, in my view.
