Numiscollect brings Christ the Redeemer, one of the New 7 Wonders, to silver with a dimensional coin

In 2001, a campaign got underway with the aim of choosing the New 7 Wonders of the World, inspired by the ancient version that included such incredible structures as the pyramids in Giza. It was all unofficial, and not universally accepted, but after six years of polling, a selection of made, and one of the big winners was the statue of Christ the Redeemer.

Completed in 1931, the 30-metre tall Art Deco statue, sitting on an 8-metre pedestal, is sited on the 700-metre tall peak of Corcovado mountain in Tijuca National Park, where it looks down at the Brazilian capital, Rio de Janeiro. Around 635 tons in weight, and with a 28-metre outstretched arm span, it is the largest Art Deco statue in the world. It was created in concrete and soapstone by French-Polish sculptor Paul Landowski and built by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, with the face sculpted by a Romanian, Gheorghe Leonida.

The silver coin reproduces the statue very closely, very impressive considering it’s only an ounce in weight, and on all sides as well. The antique finish suits it well, and there’s plenty of high-relief on all faces. Honestly, as a reproduction of this iconic statue, I don’t see how you could do better with an ounce of silver.

The coin comes in a box with a front display window, similar to those the Perth Mint uses, and one that looks to be of a high quality. There’s a serialised certificate of authenticity, which matches the engraved number on the bottom of the coin, and just 299 will be offered. A solo release, it should appeal to those with a fascination for monuments of this kind. Available to order now.
