Mint XXI’s stunning Femina Bellator silver coin series showcasing warrior woman from history, heads to the Celtic World

It’s fair to say that we consider Mint XXI’s ‘Femina Bellator’ series to be one of our favourites, as we’ve certainly gushed enough praise over the first three releases in the series. These coins work off of four main elements. On the reverse, there’s a beautiful, coloured face, and alongside that, a woman warrior with their horse, cleanly struck. It’s topped off with an inset stone. This all sits over a coloured pattern using iconography from the subject’s culture. On the obverse, there’s a coloured flower, also representing that specific culture, inside a patterned border.

The first three issued featured the Valkyries, the Amazons, and the Sarmatians, all noted female warriors, and for this fourth issue, Mint XXI has chosen the Celts. The Celtic peoples don’t have as strong a tradition of female fighters, but when they do, they do it in style. Queen Boudica is perhaps the most famous of them all, having polished off around 75,000 Romans and their allies in 60-61 CE, and going on to symbolise a nation.

As you can see, it’s another stunning design. The flame-haired warrior is beautiful, and the placement and realisation of the horse, first-class. The aventurine stone, and green background field tie in perfectly, hinting that the subject is from the extremes of the British Isles, perhaps Irish, Scottish, or Cornish, for example. What narrows it down further to Scotland, is the choice of flora on the obverse. The thistle is their national flower, and it sits on a shield, behind which are the period weapons of choice. A Celtic knot pattern surrounds it all in a border.

The coin comes boxed with a Certificate of Authenticity, and has a mintage of 500 pieces. As you’ve no doubt discerned by now, we like this one a lot, just as we have the three prior issues, and make no apology for that. Available to order now.
