The end of dragons, the light of a god, and an eagle hits 250. Our second look at Mint XXIs Summer coin launch

We had a look at three of the seven coins issued by Mint XXI for their Summer Launch last Friday, and here, we’re focusing our attention on three more of them. The first three were first class, and the standard remains sky-high here as well. Two of these are additions to an ongoing series (one for the final time), and the other is one of the first issues marked to commemorate 250 years since the US Declaration of Independence. There will be many more of those to come over the next year, we’d wager.

Moving forward this week, we’ll have a look at a few of MDM’s new issues, and on Thursday, it will be CIT’s turn. After this tsunami of new issues, we’ll be taking a week’s holiday while you empty your wallets at the local coin dealer for all these stunning new coins. Congrats to Mint XXI on another fine release.

THE DRAGONOLOGY 06 : 2025 STONEGAZE BASILISK

We’re starting off with the sad news that The Dragonology series of two-ounce silver coins has now concluded, with the release of the sixth coin. This has been a superb series, featuring dragons of lore, all accompanied by a beautiful woman, the latter exquisitely coloured. Each has a colour theme, carried over to the eye on the common obverse, the only thing that differs on it.

To conclude the series, we have this Stonegaze Basilisk, a serpentine dragon named for its ability to turn people into stone when you lock eyes with it. Our lady seems impervious to its gaze, despite the proximity, and the exuberance of the basilisk. Most of the beasts in this series have been relatively restrained, but this one seems quite active in comparison. It’s an impressive end to a very impressive set of six coins, one which we really should gather up into one of our Coin Series Profiles. Boxed with a COA, it has a mintage capped at 500.

DIVINE FACES OF THE SUN 06 : 2025 APOLLO

With Mint XXI having such a mastery of ancient mythology on coins, as series like The Great Greek Mythology, and Road to Valhalla prove, it’s of little surprise that Divine Faces of the Sun is another top-quality offering. It launched in 2020 with a terrific Amun Ra design, and since then, this three-ounce silver series has given us Amaterasu, Helios, Vishnu, and Dazhbog. The sixth entrant is an old favourite, the Greek god, Apollo.

Apollo, as a god, has been well covered here already, so let’s stick to the coin design. These coins are antique finished, something that is almost de rigeur in mythology coins, and have some gilded highlights, but the signature feature of this series has always been the use of amber. The golden yellow fossilised tree resin, has always fascinated me for its importance in palaeontology, but it’s also a beautiful material for decoration, which is how the mint utilises it. Polish amber, part of wider regional deposits known collectively as ‘Baltic Gold’, is used here, which may date back as far as 56 million years.

For the coin, it decorates the bottom of Apollo’s lyre, and behind it, you can see a representation of Apollo in the Ancient Greek style. It’s a fine looking design, perhaps even superior to the one in the mint’s epic 36-coin GGM series. The obverse is attractive, which is basically a common one to the series, except for the slim border pattern by the edge, which is unique to each issue. Boxed, and with a COA, it’s another fine release in this very pretty series.

UNITED WE STAND : 250 YEARS OF U.S. INDEPENDENCE

One of the most famous dates in the world, certainly within the borders of the United States of America, 1776 represents the year that the United States declared its independence from British rule. On July 4th that year, the 13 American colonies, via the Continental Congress, issued the Declaration of Independence, and while it wasn’t internationally recognised until the Treaty of Paris in 1783, it remains the most important date in US history. 2026 marks the semiquincentennial anniversary.

As you’d expect, the anniversary will command considerable numismatic interest, and one of the first to break cover is this extravagant offering from Mint XXI. Even just a quick glance at the design tells you exactly what this is celebrating. The exaggerated eagle, the Liberty Bell, the Stars & Stripes, and that ubiquitous US phrase, ‘In God We Trust’, all put in an appearance, and it’s covered in red, white, blue and gold. It’s all quite gaudy, of course, but firmly appropriate in a symbolic sense

The obverse is fully gilded, and carries a design inspired by the infamous Eye of Providence of the back of the one-dollar bill, long a favourite of conspiracy theorists. Here, however, instead of the Great Seal of the United States, it has the Public Seal of Niue on it. A two-ounce silver coin, it comes in a wooden box, and with a Certificate of Authenticity. Just 500 will be struck.
