The Bald Eagle bursts forth in high-relief as Numiscollect turn their attention to the US icon

2018 BALD EAGLE

One of Numiscollects smaller series, High Relief Animals is exactly what it says it is. The name doesn’t tell us much else, but the three previous smartminted coins issued to date have all been beautifully done. The Narwhal, Elephant and Snow Leopard have featured so far, but we take to the air in 2018 with a striking Bald Eagle coin.

The bird is shown perched on a branch with its wings outspread. In the background is pictured a mountainous scene with another eagle in flight. Just the date and title are inscibed here. It’s a snartminted high-relief strike and there’s certainly plenty of depth to the artwork, especially considering just one-ounce of silver is available to work with. The signature detail of this series has always been a mix of proof and antique finishes on the reverse face. In this case, the part of the Bald Eagle that is white (the head and neck)has been left as a proof finish, with the rest antiqued.

The obverse is a simple Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, surrounded by the monetary denomination, and the issuers details. This face is antique finished. The coin has a mintage of 999 pieces and will come in a box with a certificate of authenticity. A fine design, although we still think the outstanding 2016 Elephant coin is the series high spot, and one well worth tracking down. Available to order now, we’ve not seen a shipping date yet, but wouldn’t expect it until much later this year.
